IAAF World
Championships
Day 1

Edmonton, Canada (08/03/01) - The first day of the 8th IAAF World Championships in Athletics was exciting and hot. The first event kicked off at 8:45pm with the Men's Marathon, the only event of the day. The U.S. team was represented by Khalid Khannouchi (world record holder), David Morris (former American record holder), Josh Cox, Eddy Hellebuyck, and Michael Dudley (former Detroit Marathon winner). The marathon provided an exciting finish with 5 runners separated by just 45 seconds at the 40K mark, with Kenya's Biwott in the lead by 1 second over Abera of Ethiopia. Abera had the lead as the pair entered the stadium, just a step ahead of Biwott. With the crowd cheering, Abera was able to hold off Biwott during the last 300 meters. Abera took the Gold in 2:12:42, Biwott the silver in 2:12:43 and Italy's Baldini in 2:13.18. Ethiopia captured the team title by placing their top 3 runners in the top 7 overall.
