wins team title

After some tough disappointing previous races, Lauren Fairbanks of Rogers City finally got her state title, doing it in a new Division 4 Record. Fairbanks' s time was 18:20.

Fairbanks, who finished in second place in the 1999 Finals and experienced one of the toughest finishes ever by falling just a few steps short of the finish at the D-4 track finals in the 1600, was very pleased to finally win a championship.

Fairbanks and Jennifer Leichtman of Ann Arbor Greenhills battled it out over the last mile, with Leichtman ending up in second place in 18:25. "We (Leichtman) went back and forth all the way into the stadium." Fairbanks said.

Fairbanks was impressed by Leichtman's toughness.

"It was a good race. I didn't think it would come down to that much but I tried for a hard kick. I looked back once, which I shouldn't have done, but I really didn't have much left. I just wanted to win. It was a tough race"

For Leichtman, after finishing 12th in last year's race and despite losing out to Fairbanks, this finish was very rewarding.

"I tried to take the lead and we were going back and forth after we got into the stadium, but I just couldn't catch her." She said. "But she pulled me to a really good time and I'm happy with that."

In the D-4 team competition, Maple City -Glen Lake took first with 116 points to 148 for Ann Arbor Greenhills.
