Day 4 Coverage

Sacramento, CA -
July 12th

The fourth day of competition at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials Track & Field saw the most excitement in the women's 5000m. Shalane Flanagan the 2002 and 2003 NCAA D1 XC Champion took the lead on the second lap and didn't lose it until the last 200 meters. She got passed by Marla Runyan and Shayne Culpepper with about 200 meters to go and had Amy Rudolph closing on her. Shalane who just turned pro a week ago, said "I had a whole bunch of strategies". The pace was to slow at the beginning and so she said "I went with my gut instinct". The pace was 2:32.23 at the 800m, 4:58.38 at the 1600m, 9:51.45 at the 3200m and 14:36.29 at the 4800m. Shayne Culpepper out kicked Marla to take the 5000 title and a trip to Athens with a time of 15:07.41. Shayne brings home the second 2004 Olympic Trials title to her household in 2004. Her husband Alan won the Men's Marathon title in February. Marla finishes second in 15:07.48 and Shalane Flanagan holds onto third with a time of 15:10.52.

In the men's 5K semi's heat 1 was won by Matthew Gonzales in 13:44.19 followed by Chad Johnson, Eric Savoth, Matt Lane, Luke Watson, Louis Luchini, Mark Menefee (Hansons-Brooks) and Seth Hejny. Heat 2 was won by Tim Broe in 13:42.19 who trains in Ann Arbor under UofM's coach Ron Warhurst.
