Luke Humprhey - Hanson/Brooks Views- 1342

Luke ran to a quality finish of 2:20.34 and 43rd place at the Marathon Trials. Obviously at face value this isn't a very good race for someone with a 2:15 marathon best under his belt. The reason his run was exceptional was that Luke only had a few weeks of running, let alone actual training, before the Trials as he was laid off from running for several weeks during the important parts of the prep segment.

RM: What are your thoughts on your performance at the marathon trials looking back?

LH: Overall, I thought it was about the best I could do. I never felt like I was over my head, I just couldn’t run any faster. In the end, I just listened to my body and let it dictate my pace. Honestly, it was probably the easiest marathons I’ve run.

RM: What information/knowledge do you feel like you gained from the marathon trials?

LH: I think the biggest thing I learned, is that anything can happen. Favorites can drop out, Unknowns will run out of their mind. If you can just keep an even keel and not worry, you can let other people make you look good.

RM: How did you like the Central Park course setup and the rest of the organization of the NYRR?

LH: I really liked it. It was great for spectators and there weren’t really any quiet spots on the course. I didn’t like the timing of the race (being in the fall), but the setup was unbeatable. Mary and Sam are great people with tremendous organization. They are incredible at what they do.

RM: When will you next run another marathon and what would you like to accomplish in that?

LH: Kevin and Keith have talked me out of running Boston this spring, so it will be something next fall. I’m a little worried because it will have been two full years since I’ve really raced one, but everything works out, so I’ll trust them. I really feel like I am on the verge of running a good marathon. I can handle the mileage and the intensity, so now I’m at the point where it’s the smaller details of training. In any case, I think 2:11-2:12 is being pretty realistic.

RM: What will/did your recovery consist of after the trials? How much time off and is there any cross training?

LH: I think I made Kevin and Keith a little mad that I only took about a week off, but they understand that I had already taken a month off and didn’t really race too hard. I biked a couple times at Lifetime, started my lifting routine back up. Then, started putzing along in Bloomer Park and then progressed from there.
