Clint Verran is runner-up at Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon
Rochester Hills, MI, October 20, 2008--Hansons-Brooks (powered by Saturn) athlete Clint Verran ran 2:18:21 en route to a second-place finish at the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon on Sunday morning.
Verran, the veteran of two IAAF World Championship marathons and three-time veteran of the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, paced his way through the half at 1:09:03 with a pack that included Stephen Muturi (Rochester, Mich.) and Kenyans Hillary Lelei and Edward Kiptum. The race for second place began when former University of Michigan athlete Tommy Greenless (Walnut Creek, Calif.) caught Verran and the others at mile 21, and the two broke from the group with just over 5 km to race. As the duo approached the finish, Verran made a final surge over the last 150 meters to lay claim to second place with a narrow 5-second victory over Greenless (2:18:26).
The race was won with a strong effort from David Cheruiyot (Kenya), who ran 2:16:44 for his seventh marathon victory in three years. Cheruiyot won the 2008 ING Ottawa Marathon in a near personal best time of 2:10:56 last May. He also won the Chevron Houston Marathon for the third time this January--running a 2:12:32.
