Humphey, Yealin Win the Third Portland Winter Run

January 15, 2000

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: CONTACT: Matt J. Bozung

Portland, MI -- Luke Humphrey of Sidney, MI and Deborah Yealin of Ada, MI were the first of 150 finishers on a record-breaking day at the third annual Portland Winter Run 5K on Saturday, January 15.

In all, nine new age group records and the two overall course records were set thanks in a large part to the weather. By the 10:00 am race start, temperatures rose to about 30 degrees and only a slight south west wind provided resistance to the competitors. That, combined with a fast course that was cleared completely of snow and ice provided the chance for some great times. Humphrey, who is a freshman on the Cross Country and Track teams at Central Michigan University, shattered the old course record by almost a minute with his time of 15:46. Luke had some strong runners to push him in the beginning and he used his training from CMU to carry him through to the finish, said Matt Bozung, co-race director of the Winter Run. Humphrey was followed by Eric Stuber of Lansing (16:30), Jim Minnema of Walker (16:31), and Greg Hemler of Fruitport (16:59).

Deborah Yealins time of 20:31 set a new female course record. She bested the old record by 14 seconds. Yealin was followed by Maryellen Stornant of Portland (21:53), Corey Cunningham of Pewamo (22:10), Nancy Willemin of Lansing (22:24), Brooke Zilch of Haslett (22:39), and Lesley DeGroot of Laingsburg (22:49).

The City of Portland was represented by fifteen runners. The runner who traveled the farthest to compete in the race was Roy Shafer of Cuyahoga Falls, OH. Special guests of the Portland Running Club at the event included State Representative Valde Garcia, who started the race and distributed awards, and 92.1 The Edge (WWDX), who broadcasted live from 9:30- 11:30 am. Sponsors of the event included Attourney Patrick Duff, Attorney Catherine Hoort, TRW of Portland Portland Federal Credit Union, Tri County Electric Cooperative, Bagel Haul Delicatessen, Great Harvest Bread Co., Goodrich Bros., Browns Pharmacy, B&W Auto Supply and Farm Bureau Insurance; Jack Griffin, Agent.
