2004 High School XC State Meet

Update #1:
D3 Girls, Race Time: 10:00 a.m.

Senior runner Janee Jones from Goodrich helps propel her team to the top spot by winning in a time of 18:07. Janee when asked about her race said "It was hard", but you couldn't tell by watching her race. Janee easily won the first race of the day and helped Goodrich defend it's 2003 title. In 2003 Janee placed 13th in 19:24.25 and was the 3rd runner for Goodrich, in 2004 she left no doubt who was the best runner in D3. Janee had plans of going out slower, but instead she went through the mile with a 3 second lead in 5:45.55. She went through the second mile in 11:37.5 for a 20 second lead. Kalamazoo Christian Leah Reames finished 2nd in 18:54.9 giving Janee a 46 second win. Erin Batt of Hillsdale placed 3rd in 18:57.30 and helped her team to a 4th place finish.

Goodrich won the team title with 69 points, Jackson Lumen Christi was 2nd with 119 points and Williamston placed 3rd with 144 points.

 

Update #2:
D4 Girls, Race Time: 10:30 a.m.

Sophomore runner Marissa Treece of Maple City Glen Lake wins the Division 4 race, however it wasn't enough to push Maple City passed Big Rapids Crossroads who took home the crown with a score of 115. Marissa Treece and Ulby's Jackie Rivard raced together for the first 2 1/2 miles going through the mile in 5:50 and the two mile in 11:50. Marissa finally pulled away from Jackie around 2 1/2 miles and crossed the line in 18:20.7, to take a 10 second win. The last time the two race against each other was at 2004 D4 Track finals, when Marissa won the 3200 meter title and Jackie was 3rd. Jackie finished 2nd in 18:30 and paced her team to a 5th place finish. Saugatuck's Tricia Rozeboom finished 3rd in 18:53.9.

Big Rapids Cross Roads finished 3rd in 2003, but in 2004 they captured the team title with 115 points. Southfield Christian took home the runner-up trophy with 146 points and Ann Arbor Greenhills was 3rd with 169 points.

 

Update #3:
D3 Boys, Race Time: 11:00 a.m.

Harbor Springs moves from a Division 4 title a year ago to a Division 3 title this year, with Josh Hofbauer taking home the individual title in 15:48. Josh and Essexville Garber's Zac Gallagher battled for the first two miles going through the mile in 4:55 and the two mile in 10:05. Josh finally pulled away in the last mile saying "Right after the two mile I knew I had to get away ... I surged and kept it ... I had to do it, I have been working since I was a sophomore." In 2003 Josh finished 3rd in the D4 MHSAA XC LP Finals. Zac Gallagher finished second in 15:54 and Elk Rapid's Mike O'Shaughnessey was 3rd in 15:57.

The move to Division 3 didn't phase Harbor Springs as they scored 91 points to capture a state title for the second year in a row. Grand Rapids West Catholic was second with 105 points and Williamston was third with 125 points.

Update #4:
D4 Boys, Race Time: 11:30 a.m.

Running his first state meet ever, Senior Justin Todd from Climax-Scotts wins in a time of 16:28. For the team title Hesperia edged out Bear Lake by a point to take home the title. The boys D4 race proved to be a close one, with the top 5 runners finishing within 7 seconds. Justin said "It was tough", when talking about the competition. Justin went through the mile in 5:11.2 with a pack of 5 runners and the two mile in 10:34.5 with the top 4 still close together. Justin finally made his move as they entered the track and crossed the line with a 5 second win. When asked about his race Justin said "I kept fighting". Hale's Curtis Barclay was second in 16:33.6 and Saginaw Michigan Lutheran Seminary Loren Mibrath was third in 16:34.1.

Hesperia scored 124 points to Bear Lake's 125 points to take the D4 Boys Team Title and Potterville finished third with 191 points.

Update #5:
D2 Girls, Race Time: 1:30 p.m.

East Grand Rapids dominates the team competition with a score of 92. Sophomore. Bekah Smeltzer of Monroe Jefferson takes the individual honors with a time of 17:51 and post the fastest girls time of the day. Bekah and Vicksburg's freshman Molly Waterhouse pulled away from the field going through mile in 5:41 and the two mile in 10:30. Bekah, the runner up in 2003, made her move to pull away from Molly in the third mile and finished with a 17 second win. When Bekah was asked if she thought it was going to be a close race, she said "Yeah, I knew Molly was a really good athlete." Bekah's XC State championship is a nice addition to her 2004 Track State championships in the 1600M and 3200M. Molly Waterhouse held off Wayland Union's Jessica Armstrong for second place in 18:08, Jessica was third in 18:09.

East Grand Rapids won its second championship in a row with a score of 92 points. Grand Rapids Christian was second with 153 points and Dexter finished third with 211 points.

Update #6:
D1 Girls, Race Time: 2:00 p.m.

Clarkston once again takes the team title honors. The individual title goes to Saline High School's junior runner Eileen Creutz with a time of 18:02. Eileen, Rockford's Rachel Wittum and Clarkston's Liz Mengyan battled for the win the entire race going through the mile in 5:49 and the two mile in 11:41. Liz had a three second lead at the 3 mile mark, but stopped thinking it was the finish line. Eileen, the 2003 runner-up, passed Liz to finish with a 9 second victory over Rachel, the 2003 champion. An excited Eileen Creutz said "I felt awesome ... It was amazing ... Best race ever."

Clarkston defended it's 2003 title by scoring 132 points, Traverse City Central placed 2nd with 172 points and Okemos was third with 179 points.

Update #7:
D2 Boys, Race Time: 2:30 p.m.

Daniel Roberts of Vicksburg ran the fastest time of the day holding off Riley Klingel of Fremont for a 3 second win, with a winning time of 15:19. Dexter brings home the team title with 93 points. Daniel and Riley ran together the entire race going through the mile in 4:57, the two mile in 9:53 and the three mile in 14:49. Daniel didn't know if he could win the race until he pulled away in the last 1/10 mile. Daniel when asked about the race said it was "A little slower then I wanted." Daniel commented on Riley he said "He is a great runner, a great guy and I hope to see him at Foot Locker". Cedar Spring's Dan Cramer finished third with a time of 15:38.9.

Dexter won it's third title in a row with 93 points. Klingel paced Fremont to a second place finish with 128 points. Bloomfield Hills Lahser scored 174 points for third place.

Update #8:
D1 Boys, Race Time: 3:00 p.m.

Highland-Milford edges out Pinckney and Ann Arbor Huron in the best team race of the day to take the title, but it was Justin Switzer of Waterford Kettering who took the individual honors in 15:22. Switzer, 3rd in 2003, went through the mile in 4:57 and then opened up a lead in the second mile going through the two mile mark in 9:50.3. Switzer finished with a 13 second win. Birmingham Brother Rice's John Black finished second in 15:35 and Novi's Mark Moore pulled away from three other runners in the last 100 meters to take third in 15:38. When Switzer was asked about the race he said "I was really hoping to go below 15:00 ... but the mud around the turns slowed me down so much." Next up for the D1 XC State champion is the Midwest Footlocker regional.

Highland-Milford defended their 2003 title by scoring 108 points. Pinckney scored 120 points for second and Ann Arbor Huron finished third with 129 points.
