Michigan's McGregor is Women's Champ Wolverine Men Win Second Straight Title Ann Arbor, MI By Dave McCauley - RunMichigan.com! Katie McGegor's long list of accomplishments grew a little larger this past Sunday in Ann Arbor, as the Willoughby, Ohio native won her second straight Big Ten Women's individual championship. McGregor's time of 17:16 for the 5000 meter UofM home course was six seconds better than runner up Erica Palmer of Wisconsin and only one second off of her own course record. In the team competition, Michigan was edged by Wisconsin by only 5 points, 31 to 36. Far behind in third place was Minnesota with 104 points. Michigan State placed 5th, with 125 points. Michigan's top runners included former Rochester Adams runner Michelle Slater who finished in 6th place (17:53), Lisa Ouellet in 7th (18:01), and Elizabeth Kampfe in 8th (18:04). Michigan State's top runner was Jan Denkins of Flushing, who placed 18th in 18:30. McGregor's last home meet was a memorable one. Some may have thought that McGregor could not top her 1997 season when she was Big Ten Champion and also placed 5th at the NCAA Nationals with a 5000 meter time of 16:48, but she may be on her way to an even better 1998. Her goals however at this time are more team related. "Definitely we just want to get to nationals first off, however it takes for us to get there, and from there we'll just take it one week at a time." A notable finish on the day was that of former Saginaw Valley Lutheran runner Bethany Brewster. Brewster, now in her first year of college, finished in 5th place overall with a time of 17:42 in helping her Wiscosin Badger teammates to the Women's Team Championship. Brewster was her team's third runner and received All Big Ten honors in just her freshman season. |
