Michigan's Men's Cross Country team gave coach Ron Warhurst a 25th anniversary gift he'll remember by presenting him with the team's second straight Big Ten Cross Country Championship this past Sunday in Ann Arbor. The Wolverine men, led by senior John Mortimer, dominated the team competition, placing all of its top five runners in the top 20 to claim the victory. Mortimer fell back to third place overall, but it was enough to power the wolverines to their 8th Big Ten title in the school's history. Wisconsin's Matt Dowdin took individual honors by dominating the race, finishing in a time of 24:06 for the challenging 8000 meter course. Michigan State's Ryan Taylor finished in second place with a time of 24:23, barely holding off Mortimer, the 1996 Individual Champion, who settled for third in 24:24. In an excellent effort, Michigan State's Men held off powerful Wisconsin for the runner up spot. State finished with a total of 64 points to Wisconsin's 70.

For Mortimer, the Big Ten individual champion in 1996, this race meant more to him than just individual glory. "Team glory is taking over my emotions for this. Individualy I'll have to reflect on it later. Right now I'm just really happy with the team's effort and I'm glad I can be a part of it." Mortimer commented in talking with RunMichigan's Scott Collins after the race. Mortimer was well aware of the team's accomplishments on the day. "Individually I helped out the team and I'm very happy about that." Mortimer's 3rd place finish helped him in earning another All Big Ten honor, his fourth in four years. This year's all Big Ten team was comprised of Wisconsin's Dowdin, Taylor of Michigan State, Mortimer, Jay Shoenfelder of Wisconsin (24:29), Todd Snyder of Michigan (Ann Arbor Pioneer) in 24:34, Ian Connor of Ohio State (24:40) and Steve Shell of Michigan State in 24:52.
