Gorzynska Takes 10th At Annual Home Meet

Beata Gorzynska (Ilawa, Poland/Mazurski of Olsztynie) returned to the cross country course in a big way as the senior stepped up for the Titans in the 23rd Annual Running Fit- Detroit Titan Invitational, held on Saturday morning at Cass Benton Park.

Gorzynska, who did not run in last week's season opener, led Detroit to a fourth-place finish with a personal record time of 19:31. On the day, the Titans earned 93 points.

Freshman Alexandria Vintevoghel (Casco, MI / Marine City) had an impressive run for the second week in a row taking 16th in 19:46, the eighth best rookie time ever at Cass Benton.

"Beata came through with her best race ever on this course and Alexandria was again under 20 so I am very excited for the women's team," said head coach Guy Murray.

Junior Kristie Ferrans (Carleton, MI/Monroe) finished just outside the top 20 with a 21st-place effort in 20:02, while sophomore Kirstin Mooney (Stirling, ON/St. Theresa Catholic) earned 27th with a run of 20:14.

Sophomore Stephanie Rossman (Caledonia, MI/Caledonia) and freshman Katrina Oberski (Clyde, MI/Port Huron) were neck and neck at the end finishing in a tie for 30th in 20:26, while senior Jennifer DeFauw (Harper Woods, MI/Grosse Pointe North) rounded out the Titan scorers with a 36th-place finish in 21:03.

"The women definitely took another great step today so we are all happy about that," added Murray.

Lindsey Scherf of Front Line Racing posted a time of 17:23 for the overall individual victory, the second best time ever in the 5k race, while Eastern Michigan won the team event with 45 points.

The day began with the running of two open races featuring high school, middle school and open competitors. The youngsters in attendance then got a chance to get in the action with the annual Tommy Titan Kid's race for all children nine and under.

UDM will be back in action next Friday when the red, white and blue take part in another traditional race, the National Catholic Championships, hosted by the University of Notre Dame.
