Great Lake Relay Results

The Toyota Great Lakes Relay was run July 18-20 with great weather and even
better competition. Running Fit Roadkill retained their title with a
masterful running performance beating the handicap heavy Oakland Posse and
the young, fast legs of The M 10 team. Roadkill was the first of the third
wave starters to the finish line 2 of the 3 days. They proved to have the
best mix of age, gender and speed once again. Other notable performances
came from the Grand Rapids Track Club and the related Tulip City Striders.
Both teams began the race with seven runners each - a tough task to race
282.5 miles with that many runners. The Grand Rapids Track Club team
finished 6th overall in the open division - quite an accomplishment with only
seven runners. The Tulip City Striders started with the same number of
runners ( seven ) but by the third day were down to five! They finished the
race still able to walk even though captain Don Yeager had logged over 60
miles for the three days.

The course for this year's race was a little longer than last year's short
course of 257 miles. All of the favorite legs remained and new ones were
added such as more running along the Shore to Shore Trail. The dreaded Tommy
Toyota Leg was made exponentially harder - which everyone seemed to praise.
One almost casualty of the leg was Joanie Rogucki. The leg was named in
honor of her late husband, John Rogucki, and she wanted to run the leg in his
memory. Joanie took a wrong turn on the leg and it took some search vehicles
to get her back on course - thanks to the efforts of Al Kelly, Ron Thielman,
Nick Papas, Renee Rienas, and Richard Salt. Joanie finished the leg with a
waiting crowd cheering her final steps.

The swamp run was made a little tamer by the DNR, who built more foot bridges
over the water. Unfortunately, this meant that runners did not come out
covered with mud and muck. Rats! We'll have to find a new one for next
year.

Day three saw the same course as last year's short course with the favorite
crossing of the Manistee River drawing another cheering crowd. A fairly
heavy rain late in the third day helped a few people get lost but it also
settled the dust down on the roads which by day three was the worst I had
seen it.

The Lakeshore Striders, host club of the Relay, raised $5350 for Michigan
Special Olympics this year. The sponsors for this year were: Toyota, William
Clay Ford Center for Athletic Medicine, Outback Steakhouse, Total Runner,
Gu!, Stoker Bar, and Royal Diamond Market. Thanks to all of you runners who
made the event a success. And for those of you who haven't run, you don't
know what your missing.

Final Results follow.

See you on the roads,

Bob Baril
Co- race Director
