The Aquinas men's outdoor track & field team finished third in the 22-team field at the Al Owens Classic at Grand Valley State, which concluded on Saturday (Apr. 21). AQ had a number of strong performances and was the top non-Division II school in the two-day competition in Allendale, Mich.
With 77.5 points, Aquinas placed behind only host Grand Valley State (150 points) and Davenport (84), both Division II schools in the GLIAC. AQ finished ahead of fourth-place Hope (58) and Saginaw Valley State (50) to round out the top-five schools.
Two of the top three finishers in the 800 meter run were Saints, as Arik LaFave (SO/Hesperia, Michigan) and Will Haran (SO/Linden, Michigan) placed second and third in the event, each hitting a provisional qualifying time. LaFave used a time of 1:53.03 to finish less than a second out of first place, while Haran was not far behind at 1:53.48. LaFave's time is also fourth-best in Aquinas history in the event. Also in the 800, Matt MacGregor (SO/Rockford, Michigan) placed sixth in 1:55.09.
AQ also dominated in the 5,000 meter run, with three of the top-five finishers. Piatek was the runner-up at 15.08 meters, while Whaley placed third at 14.98 meters. Whaley – the reigning WHAC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week – was eighth in the javelin throw at 43.22 meters.
In the discus throw, Marko Peric (FR/Belgrade, Serbia) was fourth in the competition with a toss of 48.13 meters, while Piatek placed fifth at 48.03 meters and improved his provisional mark. Peric's heave is a provisional qualifier and is the fifth-longest throw in school history.
