NMU - Wildcats Take Top Spot in Seven Events at East Lansing

EAST LANSING, Mich.—Northern Michigan University Women's Track & Field competed against strong NCAA Division I competition for the second-consecutive weekend at the Spartan Invite hosted by Michigan State University. Five Wildcats combined for six victories in individual events plus a relay win with temperature below freezing and strong winds.

Junior Jenna Long (Suamico, Wisconsin) was the lone Wildcats to earn a pair of individual crowns. Five Wildcats finished in the top-10 of the 100-meters, led by long who finished with the top time of 12.70 seconds. Freshman Izabelle Peterson (Marquette, Michigan) was runner-up in the event, finishing with a time of 12.76 seconds.

Also taking the individual crown in the 200-meters, Long's time of 26.51 seconds gave her multiple wins at a meet for the second weekend in a row. Sophomore Sydney McPeters (Sugarland, Texas) was third in the event, crossing the finish line in 27.46 seconds.

Junior Paige Dutcher (Williamston, Michigan) took the top spot in the 400-meters after completing the race in 59.09 seconds. Also competing in the long jump, Dutcher finished 13th with a distance of 15 feet, six inches.

A pair of Wildcats finished in the top-five of the 800-meter run with junior Shayla Huebner (Marquette, Michigan) winning with a time of 2:18.02. Senior Kieren Becker (Fowler, Michigan) rounded out the top-five runners in the event with a time of 2:23.74.

Becker also earned a victory in the first individual event of the day. Her time of 4:39.12 in the 1,500-meter run was the top time by nearly two seconds.

NMU swept the top-three placed in the 5,000-meters led by sophomore Katelyn Smith (Gaylord Michigan). Her time of 17:59.50 defeated the field by nearly 20 seconds, while senior Vivian Hett (Burnsville, Michigan) finished second with a time of 18:19.27. Hett's first track & field appearance was good enough for eighth-best in the event in program history. Junior Abby Fifarek (Buckley, Michigan) was the third-fastest finisher with a time of 18:32.62.

The 4x400-meter relay team of McPeters, junior Lynsey Collins (Escanaba, Michigan), Dutcher, and Huebner also took the top spot with a time of 3:56.72 in the final event of the day. The victory gave NMU their seventh of the event.

Other top finishes included the 4x100-meter relay team finishing second, Senior Ine Mylle (Zonnebeke, Belgium) finishing second in the 100-meter hurdles and fifth in the triple jump, sophomore Megan Martin (Hillsdale, Michigan) finishing third in the 400-meter hurdles, McPeters finishing fourth in the 100-meter dash, and freshman Lauren Alarie (Highland, Michigan) finishing fifth in the 100-meter dash.

Next weekend, the Wildcats will head to the Golden Grizzly Invite hosted by Oakland University. The meet will start on Friday, April 13 and run through Saturday afternoon. The 2018 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships are set to begin May 2, while the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships will begin May 24 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
