GVSU Track & Field Wraps up Weekend Meets

The Grand Valley State men's and women's track & field teams started the 2018 outdoor season on the road this weekend, as the Lakers competed in four different meets across three different states. In addition, the squads saw 16 NCAA qualifying marks on the weekend, and a new school record in the men's 10,000m run set by Zach Panning, with a time 29:12.06.



91st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays - Results


GVSU sent several sprinters down to Texas to compete in the 91st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays hosted by the University of Texas and saw four qualifying marks. The women's 4x400 relay team, composed of Nicole Sreenan, Angela Ritter, Chant'e Roberts and Rachael Walters hit a provisional time of 3:41.07 in the 4x400m relay, while the men's 4x400m relay team made up of Andrew McFarland, Thomas Capers, Tyler Pavliga and Jaylin Golson hit a qualifying mark of 3:13.53.



Individually, Jessica Eby hit a qualifying mark in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:01.27, as Walters finished seventh overall with a NCAA provisional mark of 2:08.44.



Texas State Bobcat Invitational - Results


At the Texas State Bobcat Invitational hosted by Texas State, Roberts ran a qualifying mark of 55.01 in the 400m dash, while Tiara Wiggins ran a 14.13 in the 100m hurdles. Eby finished with the second best time in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:00.93 and Ritter also hit a qualifying mark in the 200m dash with a time of 24.43 seconds.



Raleigh Relays - Results


The Lakers sent their mid-distance and distance athletes to North Carolina State to compete in the Raleigh Relays and saw several athletes hit qualifying marks and witnessed Zach Panning break the men's 10,000m record with a time of 29:12.06.



Dennis Mbuta ran a 1:50.94 in the 800m race, followed by Tyler Walters, who ran a 1:52.02, and Wuoi Mach finished with a time of 14:17.74 in the 5,000m race. Zach Panning set a new GVSU 10,000m record with a time of 29:12.06, breaking the old record set by Nick Polk of 29:28.61 back in 2008, while Chris May ran a 29:44.82 in the 10,000m run. For the women, Jenna Klynstra hit a provisional mark in the 5,000m race with a time of 17:13.78.



Big Blue Classic - Results


The GVSU throwers saw several athletes hit qualifying marks, as they traveled to Eastern Illinois for the Big Blue Classic. Mary Hecksel finished first overall in the discus after she hit a provisional mark 45.25m, as Bobbie Goodwin had the second-best overall mark in the hammer throw at 52.72m. On the men's side, Justin Scavarda had the best mark regardless of division in the shot put after he threw provisional mark of 17.02m



The Grand Valley State men's and women'strack & field teams will be in action again next weekend as they will send athletes to the East Lansing, Michigan to compete in the MSU Spartan Invite and to Bowling Green, Kentucky for the WKU Hilltopper Relays, hosted by Western Kentucky University.
