ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A career-best mile from Hannah Meier was the highlight of the University of Michigan women's track and field team's final day of competition at the Saginaw Valley State Jet's Pizza Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 27).
The redshirt senior ran all by herself on the way to a 4:45.75 performance in the mile that not only clinched the win by nearly nine seconds over teammate Meg Darmofal, but also gave her the Wolverines' fourth-fastest time of the season and moved her to No. 30 on the all-time Michigan performers list in the program's storied mid-distance history.
With that performance she is also ranked No. 28 nationally.
With career-best performances in all three of her competitions this season, Meier, in her first fully healthy season as a Wolverine, is living up to the potential she showed as one of the state of Michigan's top high school runners and an underclassman standout at Duke prior to arriving in Ann Arbor.
Meier led a parade of seven Wolverines in the top 10, all of whom cracked the five-minute barrier. Darmofal was runner-up in 4:54.46, followed closely by Micaela Degenero (4:55.42) and Jena Metwalli (4:56.41) to lead a 1-2-3-4 sweep for Michigan.
Alice Hill was the lone U-M runner in uniform at 800 meters, taking runner-up honors in 2:12.14.
The Wolverines are back in action Friday and Saturday (Feb. 2-3) as they host some of the best programs from around the country in the Power Five Invitational at the new U-M Indoor Track Building. Teams from the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC will all square off with Michigan in the two-day meet, one of the best in the country.
UHLIAN'S WIN HEADLINES FIRST DAY AT SVSU
Pole vaulter Sarah Uhlian took the win at the Saginaw Valley State Jet's Pizza Invitational Friday night (Jan. 26) to headline the first of two days of action for the University of Michigan women's track and field team in Saginaw.
Uhlian cleared a season's best 3.79m (12 feet, 5.25 inches) to tie unattached competitor Rebekah Petty for the evening's highest clearance.
