Aquinas Men Host Quad Meet, Finish Second

The Aquinas men's indoor track and field team hosted the Aquinas Quad Meet on Friday night (Jan. 19) at the Alksnis Athletic and Recreation Building in Grand Rapids and the Saints placed second in the four-team competition.



Aquinas scored 133 total points to finish second overall, as Hope won the team event with 165 points. Spring Arbor came in third place with 129 points, while Alma scored 121 points to finish fourth.



Curtis Bell (SR/Coleman, Michigan) was victorious in the pole vault with a leap of 5.00m, not only an A standard score, but also tied for the top pole vault in the NAIA this season. Scott Berzley (JR/Coopersville, Michigan) also recorded an automatic qualifier with a vault of 4.70m, good for second place. Assad Wilson (SR/South Haven, Michigan) came in third place at 4.35m.



Nate McKeown (SO/Hesperia, Michigan) won the high jump with a provisional qualifier of 2.01m, as no other competitor topped 1.90m. He also placed second in the long jump at 6.56m, doing so on his first attempt of the meet.



John Piatek (JR/Traverse City, Michigan) won the shot put with a heave of 15.22m, a provisional qualifying toss. He has the 11th-farthest throw in NAIA so far this year. Matthew Quinn was the runner-up in the weight throw with a toss of 13.40m.



Sam Freeman (SR/Grand Rapids, Michigan) was victorious in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.08 seconds, while Melvin Moseley (FR/Rockford, Michigan) placed fifth in 7.18 seconds.



Luke Simonds and Stephen Pfahler placed second and third in the 1,000 meter run. Simonds finished the event in 2:40.28, while Pfahler was close behind in 2:43.71. William Libs (JR/Ann Arbor, Michigan) was seventh in the 800 meter run at 2:11.36.



Brody Heitzman (JR/Grand Rapids, Michigan) placed fifth in the 400 meter dash in 52.68 seconds and Jason Lenon was eighth in 55.73 seconds. Ed Martinez was fourth in the 60 meter hurdles in a time of 9.24 seconds.



The Saints dominated the 600 meter run, with 11 of the 15 runners in the final and the top seven finishers being AQ runners. Arik LaFave (SO/Hesperia, Michigan) won the event in 1:25.34, with Robert Morse (FR/Traverse City, Michigan) placing second in 1:26.11 and Grayson Harding (SO/Grand Rapids, Michigan) in third place with a time of 1:26.65.



In the 200 meter dash, Aquinas took spots two, three, and four. Freeman finished just out of first place with a time of 22.68 seconds, with Edwin Anderson (FR/Wyoming, Michigan) in third place (23.20 seconds), and Demetrius Miller in fourth (23.35).



The 4x400 meter relay of Octavian Condet (SR/Caledonia, Michigan), Miller, Tristan Milarch, and Alex Hoop placed third with a time of 3:37.11.



Both of Aquinas' 4x800 meter relay teams placed in the top-two, with the B-team of Adam Bundy (JR/Grand Rapids, Michigan), LaFave, Morse, and Connor McGee (FR/Traverse City, Michigan) winning the event.



Aquinas is next in action at Grand Valley State next Saturday (Jan. 27) at 11:00 a.m. in the Mike Lints Alumni Open.
