GVSU - Lakers Dominate GVSU Open

The Grand Valley State track & field teams hosted the GVSU Open Friday (Jan. 19) and captured and captured a pair of victories as the men scored 141 points en route to the win, while the women won with 126 points. The Lakers will be in action again on January 27 when they host the GVSU Lints Alumni Meet at the Kelly Family Sports Center.



The Laker women had five athletes hit provisional marks during the meet. In the track events, Allie Ludge ran the 800 meter race for the first time this season and hit a provisional mark of 2:10.81 and a first place finish. Tiara Wiggins also hit a provisional mark of 8.65 in the 60 meter hurdles, which was her best time this season.



The Lakers had more success in the field events as throwers Dajsha Avery, Bobbie Goodwin and Mariah Mansperger all hit provisional marks. Avery earned a first place finish, hitting a provisional mark of 13.79 meters in the shot put, while Goodwin hit a provisional mark of 18.42 meters in the weight throw en route to a first place finish. Mansperger also hit a provisional mark in the weight throw placing second with a throw of 17.57 meters.



The men had two field athletes hit provisional marks during the meet, as Justin Scavarda and Isaiah Thomas both hit provisional marks in their events. Scavarda hit provisional marks in the shot put and weight throw, throwing 16.61 meters and 18.06 meters. Thomas also hit a provisional mark and a season-best in the long jump, after reaching a distance of 7.33 meters.



The Laker men also had seven athletes claim first place finishes, while scoring in 12 different events during the GVSU Open.
