Aq Women Place Second, Men Third To Open Season at Bob Eubanks Open

The Aquinas indoor track and field teams put together terrific showings to start off the 2018 season on Friday (Jan. 12) at the Bob Eubanks Open, held at Grand Valley State in Allendale, Mich. AQ's women were runners-up in the opening outing of the year, while the Saints men finished in third place, as a number of outstanding performances highlighted the day.

On the women's side, Aquinas scored 71.75 points to finish ahead of North Central (56) and Ursuline (50). GVSU won the meet with a score of 177.75 points. The Saints men scored 74 points, placing behind GVSU (150) and North Central (140). AQ's men finished ahead of fourth-place Northwood (58.5) and Valparaiso (54).

Adri Sigafoose (SR/McBain, Michigan) not only won the 600 meter run with a time of 1:35.10, but she hit the A standard and recorded the second-fastest mark in school history in the event. Whitney Taylor (FR/Mt. Pleasant, Michigan) used an eighth-place finish to score with a time of 1:42.29 and Taylor Ward (JR/Hastings, MI) finished right behind in ninth place at 1:42.34.

Yara Marie Hugo (FR/Aschaffenburg, Germany) recorded a 1.57 meter leap in the high jump, good for a fifth-place finish. Hannah Hayes (FR/Troy, Michigan) tied for seventh place with a high jump of 1.47 meters.

In the 60 meter dash, Courtney Truss (SR/Traverse City, Michigan) placed fifth at 7.87 seconds, while Rosalia Russo finished eighth with a time of 8.04 seconds. Truss also finished as the runner-up in the 300 meter dash with at time of 41.06 seconds, as Analis Floyd (JR/Grand Rapids, Michigan) scored with an eighth-place finish of 42.87 seconds.

A pair of Saints placed in the 200 meter dash, with Russo finishing fifth at 26.23 seconds and Jordan Goodman (FR/Fountain, Michigan) placing eighth in 26.59 seconds. Amore Brown (JR/Flint, Michigan) scored in the 60 meter hurdles with a sixth-place time of 9:38 seconds.

In the 800 meter run, Alexis Miller (JR/Caledonia, MI) was third and Janie Noah (SO/Middleville, Michigan) placed fifth with times of 2:22.31 and 2:24.61, respectively.

Five Saints competed in the mile run, with Melissa Winchester (JR/Wayland, Michigan) finishing fifth in 5:14.71 and Meghan Rasch (JR/Santa Clara, California) coming in sixth place at 5:15.27. Molly Peregrine (SR/Traverse City, Michigan) was just outside of the top-eight with a ninth-place finish in 5:19.66.

The 4x400 meter relay team of Floyd, Hannah Sperry (SO/Norton Shores, Michigan), Anna Repesh (SO/Holland, Michigan), and Sigafoose placed fourth overall with a team time of 4:06.86. A second Aquinas team of Ward, Miller, Janie Noah, and Taylor came in seventh place in the same event at 4:15.54.

Three Saints scored in the pole vault, led by Lisa Metzger (SO/Cadillac, Michigan) in fourth place with a score of 3.17 meters. AmyGrace Shoop (SR/Ludington, Michigan) was sixth at 3.02 meters, while Allyson Marvel (SO/Cedar Springs, Michigan) finished eighth overall at 2.87 meters.

Curtis Bell (SR/Coleman, Michigan) was victorious in the pole vault with an A standard score of 4.90 meters. Assad Wilson (SR/South Haven, Michigan) placed seventh overall in the event at 4.50 meters, while Scott Berzley (JR/Coopersville, Michigan) was ninth at 4.35 meters.

John Piatek (JR/Traverse City, Michigan) hit the A standard in the shot put with a performance of 15.62 meters to finish in second place and record the fourth-longest throw in school history.

Will Haran led three Saints in the 600 meter run, as Haran won the event in a time of 1:21.88. That is the third-fastest time in Saints history in the event. Also scoring for AQ were Brody Heitzman (JR/Grand Rapids, Michigan) and Robert Morse (FR/Traverse City, Michigan) in fifth and seventh place, respectively. Heitzman's time was 1:24.08, while Morse finished in 1:24.60.

Arik LaFave (SO/Hesperia, Michigan) placed third in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:57.17. Grayson Harding (SO/Grand Rapids, Michigan) finished just outside of the top-eight with a ninth-place time of 1:58.84. In the mile run, Gannon Foley (FR/Portage, Michigan) was fifth overall in a time of 4:22.40.

Melvin Moseley (FR/Rockford, Michigan) was seventh in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.15 seconds. In the 200 meter dash, Sam Freeman (SR/Grand Rapids, Michigan) finished as the runner-up with a second-place time of 22.35, while Edwin Anderson (FR/Wyoming, Michigan) was fourth in a time of 22.91 seconds.

A pair of Saints relay teams scored in the 4x400 meter relay event. The team of Octavian Condet (SR/Caledonia, Michigan), Demetrius Miller, Ryan Ramey (JR/Manistique, Michigan), and Heitzman came in sixth place in 3:27.84, while Haran, Adam Bundy (JR/Grand Rapids, Michigan), Matt MacGregor, and Morse were seventh in a time of 3:29.12.

Nate McKeown (SO/Hesperia, Michigan) finished fourth with a leap of 6.23 meters in the long jump, while Evan Pugh (SO/Venedocia, Ohio) was sixth in the weight throw with a toss of 16.02 meters.

Sigafoose (600 meters), Bell (pole vault), and Piatek (shot put) all recorded automatic qualifiers with their individual performances on Friday.

Both teams will open up the home portion of their schedule next Friday (Jan. 19) at the Aquinas Quad Meet in the Alksnis Athletics & Recreation Building in Grand Rapids. The meet is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. start.
