CU - Clum hits national mark in 400; leads Track & Field teams at GVSU

ALLENDALE, Mich. – After over a month off from competition and a grueling first week of J-Term practices, the pair of Indoor Track & Field teams competed Friday at the Bob Eubanks Open, hosted by Grand Valley State University. Makayla Clum highlighted the national qualifying list while the women's 3,000m run was one of the best in school history as a group. CU will head to Indiana University, Goshen College and Saginaw Valley State next weekend to continue competition.

Women's Highlights

Makayla Clum: 400m PR provisional 3rd / 18 and PR 200m winning her heat and 10th / 38

3,000m run – Alexis McConnell and Kelli Smith paced each other taking turns leading through seven laps, setting McConnell up for a freshman record in 6th (old record 10:38.51 by Jill Louisignau in 2011). Louisignau was on hand to see her record broken.

Valerie Richter paced freshman Sierra Albus as the two closed on Smith in the final lap. Richter lowered her PR by 9 seconds to 10:34.85 leading a CU 8-9-10 finish, Smith chopped 25 off her PR finishing in 10:38.98 while Albus was just one second off Lousignau's record, running 10:39.67. The quartet took over the CU all-time list in the event putting themselves at 4,6,8 and 10th. Madison Secord lowered her best to 11:18.92 in 21st.

In the 20 lb. weight throw, Gabby Wittenbach reached 49' 11' to finish 6th and Hannah Edmonds threw 2 new bests, improving over 2 1/2" taking 8th with a mark of 48' 1/2"

Amanda Sorokin 5 second PR 2:22.82 in the 800m finishing 4th

Men's Highlights

Garrett Tremaine returned to competition and had a five second PR in the 800m

Kevin Vroegh just missed his best time in the 600m

Nate Silvey placed just outside of the Top-10 in the 600m

Grant Gayan debuted in the mile just four seconds from a Top-10 performance

Judah Bruce set new best in two events: 39' 5 1/4" for 19th in shot put and 41' 4 1/4" for 21st in the 35 lb weight throw.

Cornerstone will send athletes to three different locations next week as they will be represented at Indiana University, Saginaw Valley State University and Goshen College for the Racewalk.
