NMU - Wildcats Compete with Top Teams at Conference Crossover

ROMEOVILLE, Ill.—Northern Michigan University Cross Country outran four ranked teams, including three from the Midwest Region Saturday morning at the Conference Crossover meet hosted by Lewis University.

In her second week of action returning from injury, senior Kameron Burmeister (Menominee, Michigan) lead the Wildcats with a top-10 performance. Burmeister crossed the finish line in 10th with a time of 22 minutes, 1.8 seconds.

Sophomore Katelyn Smith (Gaylord, Michigan) and senior Vivian Hett (Burnsville, Minnesota) ran to top-20 performances, finishing back-to-back in 19th and 20th. Smith's time of 22:21.8 was her second best of the season, while Hett finished in 22:22.8 for her best time of 2017

Rounding out the top-five finishers for the Wildcats were juniors Sophie McDonald (Park City, Utah) and Kieren Becker (Fowler, Michigan) McDonald placed 77th with a time of 23:20.1, while Becker crossed the finish line 82nd in 23:23.0.

Also running for NMU were junior Abby Fifarek (Buckley, Michigan) and sophomore Hanna Torvi (St. Paul, Minnesota) who finished 100th and 141st, respectively.

NMU finished sixth in the team standings behind four ranked programs. No. 6 California Baptist University took the team title with 51 points, just ahead of GLIAC foe No. 1 Grand Valley State University who had 66 points. The University of Alaska Anchorage is receiving votes and finished third. A pair of ranked opponents finished fourth and fifth with No. 10 Walsh University finishing fourth and No. 5 Hillsdale College rounding out the top five.

The postseason begins in two weeks for the Wildcats when they host the 2017 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships at the NMU Golf Course in Harvey, Michigan.
