Calvin Women's Cross Country Has Strong Afternoon at Joe Piane Invitational

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Calvin women's cross country team had a strong showing in the Gold Division of the Joe Piane Invitational hosted by the University of Notre Dame Friday afternoon.
Calvin placed three runners in the top 100 in the race. The Knights were the only Division III institution competing in the race. The remainder were Division I schools. As the only Division III team in the field, Calvin was not given a team score due to Division I cross country rules.
Junior Katie Diekema (Kenmore, Wash./Ingelmoor HS) had another outstanding race on Friday, taking 24th individually in the 5K race with a time of 17:57.
Senior Marissa McGahan (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) was 71st (18:37) with sophomore Michelle Koetje (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) finishing 100th (18:57).
Junior Catherine Croft (Grand Rapids, Mich./Coopersville HS) was 111th (19:02) and senior Kate McLain (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian HS) 124th (19:10).
Junior Maria Kuiper (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) was 155th (19:42) and sophomore Emma Schroer (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton Warrenville-South HS) 170th (20:01).
Sophomore Leah Bishop (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was 177th (20:08)junior Breanna Kooiman (Tinley Park, Il./Chicago Christian HS) 185h (20:25) to round out Calvin's finishers.
"I thought we had a very good afternoon," said Calvin head cross country coach Brian Diemer. "We were able to shrink our time gap down from our the front to the back of our pack. I thought we competed well and made positive strides. This was a confidence builder and I think good things lie ahead for this team."
The University of Northern Iowa took first place in Friday's race with a team score of 86 points.
