SOUTH BEND, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's cross country team placed ninth in the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational Friday, Sept. 29, in South Bend, Ind. The Eagles finished with 269 points.

"We got out slow the first part of the race and played catch up the whole way," said Head Coach Sue Parks. "We salvaged a decent finish by running strongly the last half of the race but we didn't get ourselves into the race early enough to have a shot at placing much higher. Today was an improvement over our last race but we know that we have much more in us and we're ready to attack these next two weeks in preparation for our next meet."

Senior Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich.-Davison) led the Green and White for the third time this season, ranking 14th out of 159 runners. EMU raced nine student-athletes in the competition, placing three within the top-50. Redshirt senior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia-Lyceum #83) was the second Eagle to cross the finish line, placing 40th in 17:10.8. Senior Natalie Cizmas put together a strong performance, rounding out the EMU harries inside the top-50, with a 46th-place finish. Redshirt junior Allie Knoll (Warren, Mich.-Warren Mott) and junior Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville Community) also cracked the top-100, finishing 78th and 99th, respectively.

The pool of teams included a number of top-ranked programs, including the No. 1-ranked Colorado, who captured first place in the event with 47 points. The Eagles competed tough against some of the most talented runners in the nation, finishing just behind No. 26 Ohio State (8th, 266) and edging out No. 12 and tournament-host, Notre Dame (13th, 309).

The Green and White return to action a week from today, Friday, Oct. 13, at the Nuttycombe Invitational in Madison, Wis.
