NMU - Wildcats' Smith Earns top NCAA Division II Finish

EAST LANSING, Mich.—No. 13 Northern Michigan University Cross Country competed Friday afternoon at the Spartan Invite hosted by Michigan State University.

In a field of over 300 runners, sophomore Katelyn Smith (Gaylord, Michigan) finished as the top NCAA Division II runner earning a top-10 finish in the process. Smith's time of 22 minutes, two seconds in the meet was over a minute and a half better than finish in the same event a year ago.

Senior Kieren Becker (Fowler, Michigan) was the second fastest Wildcat runner placing 41st in 23:02.8. Becker pulled in a top-50 performance finishing in 41st.

Junior Abby Fifarek (Buckley, Michigan) and sophomore Hannah Torvi (St. Paul, Minnesota) placed 58th and 67, respectively. Fifarek finished in 23:37.6, while Torvi crossed the finish line in 24:02.7. Senior Kelly Pietrzak (Bay City, Michigan) rounded out the top-five scorers for NMU placing 81st in 24:18.3.

Junior Maddy Walters (Madison, Wisconsin) and freshman Elise Longley (Bloomington, Minnesota) were the sixth and seventh fastest runners for the Wildcats. Walters finished 104th in 24:53.2 with Longley placing 119th in 25:06.8.

The Wildcats compete again Saturday, September 23 in St. Paul, Minnesota at the Roy Griak Invitation.
