GVSU - Cross Country Teams Rank One And Two In Preseason

New Orleans – The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released their preseason rankings for the upcoming cross country season. The Laker women are ranked No. 1, while the men sit at the No. 2 spot.

GVSU women received 199 points in the preseason poll and seven first-place votes. Adams State is second behind the Lakers with 193 points and one first-place vote.

The Laker women return three runners from the 2016 championship meet. Sophomore Stacey Metzger, finished 15th (20:57.8), senior Kelly Haubert, placed 35th (21:22.2). Metzger and Haubert both received All-American honors, while senior Rachel Bendewald, placed 57th (21:51.6).

The men's team is ranked second in the polls with 190 points and trails Adams State, who is ranked No. 1 and received 200 points and eight first-place votes. The Laker men finished second to Adams State in the national championship meet a season ago.

GVSU returns junior Zach Panning and senior Trevor Sharnas, both runners received All-American honors last season. Planning placed fifth with a time of 29:58.3, while Sharnas placed 18th with a time of 30:51.3. Senior Wuoi Mach also scored for the Lakers, placing 48th with a time of 31:26.3.

Grand Valley will open its season on September 9, at the Knight Invitational in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
