EMU - Men's Track and Field Caps Pair of Outdoor Meets

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. & HILLSDALE, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – After an action-packed two days, the Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team wrapped up both the Penn Relays and the Gina Relays today, April 29. The Green and White had a small number of competitors finish up the Penn Relays, while a larger contingent concluded the Gina Relays.

At the Penn Relays, sophomore Cameron Hart (Columbus, Ohio – Bishop Hartley) secured a fifth-place finish in the competitive high jump championship, posting a career-best outdoor mark of 2.08 meters/ 6 feet 9.75-inches. In the hammer throw, redshirt senior Anthony Jones (Sandusky, Ohio – Sandusky) notched a launch of 56.86 meters/ 186 feet 6-inches, which was good for eighth. Finally, sophomore Derek Ziegenfuss (Allentown, Pa. – Parkland) competed in the javelin throw championship, taking eighth with a throw of 62.73 meters/ 205 feet 9-inches.

Closer to home, the Eagles completed the Gina Relays in Hillsdale. Junior Leighton Antonio (Hudson, Ohio – Hudson) finished atop the podium in the 100m dash championship, clocking in with a career-best time of 10.53 seconds. Antonio also led an EMU sweep of the 200m dash, as the junior won the race in a career-best 21.28 seconds, while sophomore Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich. – Clinton) took the silver in a personal-best 21.44 seconds. Finally, junior Brandon Bolden (Solon, Ohio – Solon) snagged the bronze with a time of 21.67 seconds.

The 400m dash championship saw freshman Trevor Marcus (Dublin, Ohio – Dublin Jerome) finish third, as he posted a time of 50.85 seconds. Eastern also wrapped up silver in the 4x100m relay, as the team of freshman Sean Beckom (Saginaw, Mich. – Heritage), Antonio, Underwood, and freshman Devonte Findlay (Lauderhill, Fla. – Blanche Ely) crossed the finish line in 41.68 seconds. In the 110m hurdles championship, Eastern was led by freshman Ivan Suazo (Brooklyn, N.Y. – Westland), who crossed the finish line in sixth-place with a time of 14.83 seconds. The success continued to the 4x400m relay championship, as the Eagles took home another bronze.

Over on the field side of things, sophomore Micah Peters (York, Ontario – Vaughn Road Academy) finished atop the podium in the triple jump open, notching a jump of 13.99 meters/ 45 feet 10.75-inches. In the discus throw, the Eagles topped the field once again, as sophomore Zach Harkey (Huron, Ohio – Huron) posted a launch of 51.40 meters/ 168 feet 8-inches. Finally, freshman Jannik Schmitt (Plymouth, Mich. – Salem) nabbed a seventh-place finish in the javelin throw open, posting a mark of 38.15 meters/ 125 feet 2-inches.

The Green and White conclude the regular outdoor season next week, making the short trip south to Toledo, Ohio for the Toledo Invitational, May 4-5.
