LSSU - Lakers pick up three firsts at Scottie Open

ALMA - Lake Superior State won three events and posted several personal bests during Friday's Jim Cole Scottie Open hosted by Alma College. LSSU coach Jason Davis noted that several Lakers competed in events outside of their specialties.

Sarah Swider cleared 1.57 meters to win the women's high jump, and she placed third in the long jump with a distance of 4.90 meters. Jack Miles took the men's 10,000-meter run in 33:05.3. Spencer Montcastle placed first in the men's 110-meter hurdles (:15.74), third in the high jump (1.75 meters) and fourth in the long jump (4.50 meters).

For the LSSU women's team, Jessica Schmidt placed sixth (:13.44) and Autumn Arseneau seventh (:13.61) in the 100-meter dash. Arseneau was also fourth in the high jump, and Alexis Penzien finished fifth as both cleared 1.40 meters. Penzien added a fifth in the long jump (4.48 meters). Lydia Heimonen finished 11th in the 1,500-meter run in 4:56.79, while Hannah Passino was 13th in 5:10.8. Trudie Mulville took third in the 10,000-meter run in 45:01.

In the women's field events, Bobbie Love finished seventh in the discus throw (28.05 meters) and ninth in the hammer throw (29.58 meters), while Sara Ostwald was eighth in the discus (25.81 meters). Taylor Watson placed sixth in the javelin throw (21.42 meters).

For the LSSU men, Kye Heimonen was the runnerup in javelin throw (41.40 meters), while third-place finishes went to Bryce DeGrammont in the 400-meter dash (:51.98), Parker Wyngaard in the 5,000-meter run (personal record tying 15:58.30), Thomas VanSlembrouck in the 10,000-meter run (33:18.3), Roger Willford in the pole vault (4.50 meters), and Cole VanOosten in the shot put (14.49 meters) and discus throw (38.25 meters).

Taking fourth place were Willford in the 400-meter dash (:52.26), Yazin Joseph in the 400-meter hurdles (:59.93), Zach Cameron in the discus throw (37.61 meters) and VanOosten in the hammer throw (personal record 40.80 meters). Cameron added a sixth in the hammer throw (37.40 meters).

Willford finished 10th in the 100-meter dash in :11.97, while Travis Sutton was 10th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:03.18.

Ryan Rogers placed sixth (16:18.48) and Adam Birkeland eighth (16:29.59) in the 5,000-meter run. In the 1,500-meter run, Garett Smith was seventh with a personal record time of 4:06.83 and Zach Workman 16th (4:24.57).
