EMU Women - Eagles Wrap Up Busy Week with Ball State Challenge

MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team wrapped up another busy weekend of competition today, April 15, at the Ball State Challenge in Muncie, Ind. The Eagles had a strong showing at the meet, claiming a number of personal-bests and top-three finishes on the day.
"Our goal was to continue to build on our marks from the last two weekends and I thought that we made some good progress in both California and Indiana," remarked Head Coach Sue Parks. "We've been dealing with some strong winds, which has held us back in some areas, but I feel that we are competing well and continuing to improve, and I believe that will pay off at the end of the season when we want to be at our best."
In the 100m dash, sophomore Jesscia Harris (Slidell, La. – Slidell) led the way, finishing with the silver after posting a personal-best time of 11.76 seconds. Just two spots behind her, junior Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa. – Hempfield Area) claimed fourth after clocking in with a career-best time of 11.94 seconds. The 200m dash saw Jones pace the Eagles, as she took home second-place after crossing the finish line with a personal-best 23.92 seconds. Harris had a strong showing as well, taking sixth in 24.89 seconds. Finally, the 400m dash saw freshman Micah Johnston claim yet another silver, as she nabbed second in a career-best 57.34 seconds.
In the mid-distance events, the Green and White claimed fourth in the 800m run, as junior Claire Mesa (Rockford, Ill. – Rockford Lutheran) crossed the finish line in 2:15.60. As was the trend in the sprints, the Eagles took home another second-place finish in the 1500m run, as junior Natalie Cizmas (Clinton, Twp., Mich. – Chippewa Valley) nabbed second in 4:32.39. Eastern also turned in a pair of personal-bests in the 3000m steeplechase and the 5000m run. Junior Lauren Pottschmidt (Granger, Ind. – Penn) was the lone Eagle in the 3000m steeplechase, as she took home fifth in 12:14.76. Finally, freshman Abbigail Stemple (Mason, Ohio – William Mason) claimed 16th in the 5000m run after crossing the finish line in 21:15.83.
Eastern had a very strong showing in the relays, as Harris, senior Khadesha James (Irvington, N.J. – Irvington), freshman Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio – West Geauga), and Jones took second in the 4x100m relay with a time of 45.97 seconds. In the 4x400m relay, EMU nabbed the gold, as James, Johnston, Hurd, and Jones clocked in at 3:44.01 to win the event. The hurdles saw senior Dayna Hurd (Carson, Calif. – Carson) secure second in both the 100m hurdles and the 400m hurdles, posting times of 14.38 seconds, which was a personal-best, and 1:02.21, respectively.
Moving to the jumps, junior Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia - Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1) competed in both the high jump and the triple jump. Dreimane claimed the bronze in the long jump with a mark of 1.61 meters/ 5 feet 3.25-inches, while also taking the gold in the triple jump with a jump of 12.50 meters/ 41 feet 0.25-inches. Freshman Catherine Mittiga (South Bend, Ind. – John Adams) was the team's top competitor in the long jump, as she finished 11th with a career-best mark of 4.99 meters/ 16 feet 4.5-inches.
Finally, Eastern also won the pole vault, as senior Natalie Uy (Kettering, Ohio – Fairmont) secured the gold with a vault of 3.85 meters/ 12 feet 7.5-inches. The discus throw saw senior Megan Pendleton (Lindsey, Ohio – Woodmoore) nab fifth with a mark of 43.14 meters/ 141 feet 6-inches.
Next week, the Eagles will remain in the Midwest, as the squad travels south to Columbus, Ohio for the Jesse Owens Invitational, April 21-22.
