GVSU - Lakers Finish Weekend at WKU Hilltopper Relays

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- The Grand Valley State men and women's track & field teams competed at the WKU Hilltopper Relays on Friday and Saturday and were able to place 34 individuals or relay teams in top eight spots in their respective events in the two-day competition.
The GVSU women were led by Jessica O'Connell in the 400m Hurdles with her first place finish with a time of 1:01.41, a NCAA provisional time. Dajsha Avery would provide the Lakers with a second place over the weekend with a 43.54m (142' 10") throw in the discus. Kyra Hull placed second as well in the hammer throw with a distance of 55.67m (182' 8"). Kathryn Mills was able to place third in the high jump, clearing 1.65m (5' 5") while Alexis Duncan placed third in the long jump with a jump of 5.86m (19' 2.75"). Samantha Saikalis placed third as well in the javelin throw with a distance of 38.22m (125' 5").
Grand Valley State's men were led by Chris Saikalis's performance in the shot put with a throw of 17.17m (56' 4") to take first place in the event. The Lakers were able to place second in four events over the weekend with TJ Burnett in the 400m Hurdles (52.42), Hunter Weeks in the High Jump (2.17m, 7' 1.5"), Nate Fasbender in the Pole Vault (4.61m, 15' 1.5"), and Mike Moon in the Hammer Throw (58.11m, 190' 8") and the Javelin Throw (52.74m, 173' 0").
The Lakers will compete in four different meets next weekend as the squad will split up and travel to Mt. Sac Relays in Sacramento, Calif., the Golden Grizzly Invite at Oakland University in Rochester, Mich., the Long Beach State Relays in Long Beach, Calif., the Gorilla Classic in Pittsburg, Kan., and the Bison Outdoor Classic in Lewisburg, Pa.
