Provided by EMU
KALAMAZOO, Mich. & STANFORD, Calif. (EMUEagles.com) –The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team began the outdoor season Friday, March 31, with the Jack Shaw Classic in Kalamazoo, Mich. and the Stanford Invitational in Stanford, Calif. The Green and White finished second in the Jack Shaw Classic with 85 points, while two Eagles competed in distance events out on the west coast.
"The team score was disappointing," stated Head Coach Sue Parks regarding the second-place team finish at the Jack Shaw Classic. "We had some athletes either missing or not at 100 percent, but I still feel that we were capable of winning this meet. There were some bright spots, but also some areas that should have gone better for us. It was not the kind of start to our season that we hoped for, but I know that we will be motivated to move forward and continue to improve each weekend from here."
Beginning at the Jack Shaw Classic, Eastern had a pair of runners finish first and second in the 100m dash. Sophomore Jessica Harris (Slidell, La. – Slidell) finished atop the podium with a time of 12.26 seconds, while freshman Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio – West Geauga) claimed the silver in 12.38 seconds. In the 200m, junior Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa. – Hempfield Area) was able to secure second-place after clocking in at 24.97 seconds. Additionally, Mason finished third with a time of 25.70 seconds. Finally, in the 400m dash, senior Khadesha James (Irvington, N.J. – Irvington) brought home yet another silver, finishing with a time of 56.89 seconds.
In the mid-distance events, the Eagles brought home two more second-place finishes. In the 800m run, junior Claire Mesa (Rockford, Ill. – Rockford Lutheran) snagged the silver after posting a time of 2:18.83, while sophomore Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind. – Zionsville Community) was the second-place finisher in the 1500m run with a time of 4:41.71. Redshirt senior Sofie Gallein (GIts, Belgium – University of Leuven) ran in the 1500m as well, crossing the finish line in 4:45.38 to claim the bronze.
Moving to the 3000m, senior Anna Aldrich (Fremont, Ind. – Fremont) was the top EMU finisher, as the Fremont, Ind. native finished third with a time of 10:23.41. Behind her, junior Danielle Bentzley (Birmingham, Mich. – Seaholm) brought home fourth in 10:37.07. Senior Dayna Hurd (Carson, Calif. – Carson) paced the Green and White in both hurdles events, claiming third in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.90 seconds, in addition to also nabbing fourth in the 400m hurdles after clocking in at 1:05.45. Eastern swept the relays as well, taking first in the 4x100m with a time of 47:03, along with the gold in the 4x400m with a time of 3:55.49.
Senior Natalie Uy (Kettering, Ohio – Fairmont) had a strong day of competition in both the high jump and the pole vault. Uy was able to claim second in the high jump, posting a mark of 1.56 meters/ 5 feet 1.5-inches, in addition to finishing atop the podium in the pole vault with a mark of 3.80 meters/ 12 feet 5.75-inches. Like Uy, junior Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia - Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1) also had an excellent day in a pair of events. Dreimane took home the silver in the long jump, notching a jump of 5.52 meters/ 18 feet 1.25-inches, in addition to top honors in the triple jump with a mark of 11.97 meters/ 39 feet 3.25-inches.
Finally, sophomore Jada Taylor (Neptune, N.J. – Neptune) and senior Megan Pendleton (Lindsey, Ohio – Woodmoore) each had a solid day in throwing events. Taylor was Eastern's top finisher in the shot put, as she secured the bronze with a throw of 9.55 meters/ 31 feet 4-inches, while Pendleton was one spot behind her in fourth. In the discus, Pendleton finished atop the podium, notching a big launch of 42.35 meters/ 138 feet 11-inches, in addition to also taking second in the hammer with a mark of 48.46 meters/ 159 feet. Over in California at the Stanford Invite, senior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia – Lyceum #83) had an incredible day in the 5000m. The Kazan, Russia native clocked in with a career-best time of 15:54.94, which was good for ninth. With that, Bogdanova further distanced herself as the top outdoor 5000m runner in program history, as she previously held the top spot in the EMU record books and has now improved that by nearly four seconds.
Similarly, junior Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich. – Davison) capped off the meet with another historic performance. The Davison, Mich. native competed in the 10000m run invite, finishing 13th and turning in the best 10000m time in program history. McDermitt was able to cross the finish line in 33:37.37, which now makes her the EMU record holder by nearly 30 seconds.
"Jordann and Alsu were both in the invitational sections of their races and they performed well against top competition," said Parks on the pair of Stanford Invite competitors. "They were not completely satisfied with their races, but whenever you can come away with two personal bests and two school records, you have to be happy. They both continue to show that they are capable of mixing it up with some of the top runners in the NCAA. It was a strong start to their outdoor seasons."
The Green and White will head to another big meet next week, as the squad will travel south to Knoxville, Tenn. for the Tennessee Relays, April 6-8.
