Hope - Women's track and field places fifth out of 26 teams at Emory Classic

The Hope College women's outdoor track & field team recorded eight top-six performances at the 26-team Emory Classic this weekend in Atlanta, Georgia en route to a fifth-place finish.

The Flying Dutch totaled 52 points and finished one point ahead of NCAA Division II Findlay. NCAA Division I Georgia State won with 172 points.

Senior Erin Herrmann of Wheaton, Illinois (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS) clocked the fastest time in the 5,000 meters unseeded race at 17 minutes, 3.05 seconds.

Two teammates also earned points in the race. Sophomore Emily Hamilton of Naperville, Ilinois (North) finished second in 18:05.36, while sophomore Avery Lowe of North Muskegon, Michigan (North Muskegon) was eighth at 18:27.44.

Junior Alison Rich of Haslett, Michigan (Haslett) took second in the javelin throw with a toss of 35.85 meters (117 feet, 7 inches). Junior Haley Fischman of Grand Ledge, Michigan (Lansing Catholic Central) was seventh at 30.32 meters (99-6).

Junior Rachael Webb of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Grandville) came in fourth in the 800 meters at 2:17.16.

Hope recorded a fifth-place 4x800 relay. Freshmen Hannah Kenny of Grand Haven, Michigan (Grand Haven), Sophia Vander Kooy of Indianapolis, Indiana (Brebeuf Jesuit) and Sally Hansma of Jenison, Michigan (Jenison) teamed with sophomore Ellie Best of Portage, Michigan (Portage Central) for a time of 9:59.73.

A second Hope entry in the relay finished sixth. Sophomore Amanda Bentley of Somanuk, Illinois (Somanuk) teamed with freshman Emily Jackson of Grayling, Michigan (Grayling), junior Kate Kooiker of Hamilton, Michigan (Hamilton) and freshman Breanna VanLaan of Lowell, Michigan (Lowell) teamed for a run of 10:20.71.

Junior Alissa Frazee of Watervliet, Michigan (Home School) clocked a sixth-place time in the 3,000 steeplechase of 12:13.13.

Senior Sarah Murphy of Ada, Michigan (Forest Hills Northern) placed sixth in the pole vault at 2.93 meters.

Hope's next meet is Friday, March 31 with visiting Calvin at Buys Athletic Fields.
