Alma - Outdoor Season Begins for Track and Field

Cedarville, Ohio - The Alma College track and field team travelled to Cedarville University in southern Ohio to begin the outdoor side of the season.

Senior Kaitlyn Arnold (Jackson, Mich. / Jackson Northwest) dominated the 5000-meter run with a time of 17:44.69, outrunning the field by over 20 seconds and contributing nearly a third of the women's team's points on the day.

Junior Chelse Van Spronsen (Jenison, Mich. / Jenison) placed third in the 3000-meter steeplechase, finishing the race in 12:13.97, setting a new college-best time by nearly ten seconds. Her previous best performance was set at the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Outdoor Championships in 2015.

Freshman John Mitrzyk (Standish, Mich. / Standish-Sterling) improved greatly on his personal best long jump with a fifth-place jump of 6.33 meters. His previous high mark was set at the Aquinas College Little meet on February 10 of this year.

Sophomore Kyle Kraus (Middlesville, Mich. / Thornapple-Kellogg) placed sixth in the triple jump with a final jump of 12.62 meters, and senior Justin Larkins (Livonia, Mich. / Livonia-Franklin) placed eighth in the javelin throw with a toss of 42.44 meters.

Other performances earning points for the women's team:

A sixth-place 3000-meter run by junior Hannah Garn (Charlotte, Mich. / Charlotte).

The 4x100 meter race ran by freshman Kimberly Bolesky (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek), junior Shannon Kievit (Lewiston, Mich. / Johannesburg-Lewiston), freshman Ruslana Gill (New Boston, Mich / Huron), and sophomore Lauren Kucharczyk (Livonia, Mich. / Churchill).

The 4x400 meter team of freshman Blaire Showers (Ithaca, Mich. / Ithaca), sophomore Erin Goggins (Hastings, Mich. / Hastings), Kievit and Arnold.

Other performances earning points for the men's team:

The 4x100 meter squad of Mitrzyk, sophomore Essa Kellah (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Godwin Heights), sophomore John Vusich (Perrinton, Mich. / Fulton), and freshman Kendric Powell (Macon, GA / Macon Central).

The 4x400 meter team of Kellah, Vusich, Powell, and freshman Payton Hirschenberger (Freeland, Mich. / Saginaw-Nouvel).

Alma College track and field will return to campus to prepare for the team's first home meet of the year, the Charles A. Gray Invitational, scheduled for Saturday, April 1 at 10:00am.
