LSSU - All-American Valdez returns to competition and places second in high jump

UNIVERSITY CENTER – Lake Superior State All-American Robert Valdez returned to competition after sitting out a year due to injury and opened the 2016-17 indoor track and field season with a second-place finish in the men's high jump at the Saginaw Valley State Holiday Open held Saturday.
Valdez, an indoor national runner-up in 2015, cleared 1.98 meters. He tied with Central Michigan's Melvin Harris and finished second to an unattached competitor. Teammate Roger Willford tied for ninth at 1.78 meters.
LSSU's Cole VanOosten placed fourth in the men's shot put (14.42 meters) and seventh in the weight throw (15.60 meters). Bryce DeGrammont was ninth in the 800-meter run (2:01.40), and Jon Meier finished 12th in 2:05.17. Willford took 11th in the long jump (5.42 meters), and Adam Birkeland was 12th in the 5,000-meter run (16:38.92).
Sarah Swider led the LSSU women by placing ninth in the high jump (1.48 meters) and tying for 10th in the long jump (4.78 meters). Alexis Penzien and Julianna Weir tied for 10th in the high jump after clearing 1.43 meters. Penzien was also 14th in the jump (4.62 meters), followed by Weir (4.38) in 16th place and Rebecca Kaiser in 18th (4.34). Rachel Leggett finished fourth in the 3,000-meter run in 13:05.39.
