MADISON, Wisc. (11/11/2016) – All six Titan harriers set season or personal records as senior Devon Sutton led the way for the University of Detroit Mercy women's cross country team at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship.

The 6k race was held at the University of Wisconsin's Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.

"The regional is quite a challenge and unique that everyone is competing for and has a chance at going to the NCAA Championship," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Guy Murray '89. "It is the most competitive meet our student-athletes face."

Sutton conquered her 6k PR for the second-straight race in crossing the finish line in 22:16, seven seconds faster than her All-Horizon League First Team run two weeks ago.

It was also 1:31 seconds better than her previous career low of 23:47 as a freshman at the GLR back in 2013. She also became the fourth Titan in school history to compete in four regional races.

"Devon put a great finish on a great year," said coach Murray. "She used her strength and moved up the whole way and just missed getting in top 100."

Junior Sydnie Fetherolf took nearly a minute off her 6k time from the HL Championship in capturing 170th in 23:13. Junior Taylor Smith also improved from the conference meet by over a minute claiming 178th in 23:19.

Junior Jenny Ponkowski established a new PR by 15 seconds in taking 181st in 23:29, beating the 23:44 she had at the conference meet.

Freshman Kayla Hughes and sophomore Annmarie Taylor each had season bests as Hughes was 197th in 24:22 and Taylor placed 216th in 26:09.

Detroit Mercy totaled 831 points for 28th in the competitive regional championships.

"Overall, the women had a good day as everyone had season bests or career marks," added coach Murray.

The race was the final of the year for the Titans as the distance runners will now get ready for the indoor and outdoor track and field campaigns.
