LOUISVILLE, Ky. (10/1/2016) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's cross country teams had two runners post sub-19 minute races as the Titans competed in the 15th Annual Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday.
The 5k race was held at E.P Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky, and hosted by the Louisville Sports Commission.
As a team, the Titans were 35th totaling 949 points.
Senior Devon Sutton and junior Sydnie Fetherolf were the two Titans under 19 as Sutton placed 143rd in 18:35, while Fetherolf finished in 18:40 for 148th.
Junior Jenny Ponkowski tallied a career-best with a time of 19:03 for 190th and junior Taylor Smith clocked a season low taking 233rd in 19:46.
The Titans will be idle next week before returning to action at the Canisius Alumni Classic on Oct. 15.
Here is a recap of the action at today's race:
The Titans had the same scoring five for the second-straight week, while senior Devon Sutton and juniors Sydnie Fetherolf, Jenny Ponkowski and Taylor Smith were the top four for the fourth-straight race.
Sutton set a PR on the course by nearly a minute eclipsing the 19:30 she ran as a freshman in 2013.
Sutton's 18:35 was the second best run by a Titan at the event, trailing only Louisa Coppola's 18:03 in 2013.
She also led the Titans for the third time on the season.
Fetherolf was just four seconds off her 5k PR she set at the National Catholic Championships just two weeks ago.
She also had a big career mark at the course beating her previous time of 19:24 at last year's race, a 44-second improvement.
Fetherolf's 18:40 is the third best run by a Titan ever at Louisville.
Ponkowski lowered her 5k career time for the third-straight week and by one second over the 19:04 at Notre Dame.
Her 19:03 time now ranks sixth in school history at the GLC.
Smith was under 20 in a 5k for the first time this season.
In just her second DI race, sophomore Veronica Towianski lowered her 5k mark by 19 seconds from her official season debut of 20:08 at Notre Dame.
Freshman Kayla Hughes made a huge stride knocking more than a minute off her 5k season time and finishing in 20:59, besting the 22:04 at the Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational.
Sophomore Annmarie Taylor set another PR posting a time of 21:26, while junior Sydney Shaw tallied a season low by 45 seconds with a time of 21:50.
