NOTRE DAME, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team put together a solid race today, Sept. 30, at the Notre Dame Invitational, highlighted by a pair of top-30 individual finishers. The Eagles, who finished 12th overall, were able to beat No. 30 Texas and No. 30 Florida State, in addition to Texas A&M, who was receiving votes in the national poll.

"We are very disappointed in the result," explained Head Coach John Goodridge. "Four of our guys were involved in a fall in the first 300 meters that put three of them on the ground, and in last place when they got up. We hoped for a much higher placing today. Thankfully, no one got hurt."

Redshirt junior Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland - Mountain Ridge) paced the Eagles throughout the first split, holding 24th in the early goings of the five-mile race. Senior Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich. - Mason) was just behind him in 26th, while redshirt junior Abel Flores (Defiance, Ohio - Defiance) was the next EMU runner, sitting in 72nd.

Raymond then jumped Andresson at the next split, as he held 21st while the Iceland native dropped one spot to 25th. Junior Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium - Stedelijk Lyceum Paardenmarkt Luchthaven) also eclipsed Flores, as he moved into 70th while Flores dropped one spot to 73rd.

The end of the race saw Raymond improve even further, as he crossed the finish line in 15th after posting a time of 24:01.9, which was a personal-best five-mile time by nearly 22 seconds. Andresson, who went back-and-forth with Raymond throughout the race, ultimately clocked in at 24:11.5 to finish 26th, with his time being a career-best by 15 seconds.

Behind Raymond and Andresson, Bouchikhi had a solid race as well, bringing home a 74th-place finish after clocking in at 24:42.5. Flores followed Bouchikhi, nabbing 84th with a time of 24:48.4, which was just shy of his career-best.

From there, redshirt junior Mitch Lenneman (River Falls, Wis. - River Falls) concluded the race just behind Flores, as the River Falls, Wis. native crossed the finish line in 24:50.5 to take 89th. In his second race on the season, junior Csaba Matko (Racalmas, Hungary - Szechenyi Istvan Gimnazium) secured a 116th-place finish after posting a time of 25:04.7.

Senior John Knox (Gloversville, N.Y. - Gloversville) also had a solid race for the Eagles, finishing 138th after crossing the finish line in 25:21.3. Rounding out the Green and White was redshirt freshman Austin Sargent (Cedar Spring, Mich. - Cedar Spring), who clocked in at 27:12.8.

The Eagles will next have a weekend free of competition to allow for further training as the season continues to progress. The Green and White will then head to the Wisconsin Invitational, Oct. 14, for the first time and square off with another tough field of teams.
