Alma, Mich. - Running at home for the first time in five seasons, the Alma College men's cross country team placed eighth at the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Jamboree, held at Alma's Pine River Country Club.

Calvin College won the event with 18 points, placing all five of its runners in the top seven of the field. Albion College was second with 72 points, while the Scots scored 199.

Junior Zane Berlanga (Canton, Mich./Plymouth) was the top finisher for the Scots, placing 35th with a time of 27:23.8, while freshman Luke Reed (Benzonia, Mich./Benzie Central) finished 38th in 27:56.9.

Freshman Jack Montgomery, junior Jeff Schlicker (Standish, Mich./Standish-Sterling) and senior Charlie Clark (Beal City, Mich./Beal City) all finished within 10 seconds of each other to round out the scoring for Alma.

"We're very pleased with the effort put forth by all the guys," Head Coach Matt Chovanec said. "It's been a long time since we've had our top seven under 29 minutes. We're getting better each week. We've just got to continue staying positive and know that what we learn in these early races will allow us to have peak performances at the end of the season when it's championship time."

Alma has a week off before taking part in the Lansing Invitational on Friday, Oct. 7.
