SOUTH BEND, Ind. (9/16/2016) -- Senior Devon Sutton had one of the best runs in school history at Notre Dame as the Titans competed in the 37th Annual National Catholic Championships on Friday.
The 5k race was held at the Burke Golf Course on the campus of Notre Dame with Detroit Mercy tallying 233 points for ninth.
Sutton took 30 seconds off her career 5k time placing 12th overall in 18:22. It was the sixth-best time in school history at the annual event.
Junior Sydnie Fetherolf was 42nd in 19:02, while junior Jenny Ponkowski was right behind her taking 43rd in a career-best time of 19:04.
The Titans will have a week off before competing in the Greater Louisville Classic on Oct. 1.
Here Is How The Action Went Down At The National Catholic Championships:
For the third-straight race, the top four finishers were all upperclassmen with the top two changing order.
Senior Devon Sutton continued her strong start with her third-straight personal record in a race. She claimed 12th in 18:22, 30 seconds better than her previous 5k mark of 18:52 set just last week at the Titan home meet.
Her time was also nearly a minute faster than her previous 5k best on the course when she ran 19:19 as a freshman.
She now owns the sixth-fastest time in school history at Notre Dame.
Junior Sydnie Fetherolf just missed getting under 19 minutes, but did best her career time on the course by one second over the 19:03 she had as a freshman.
Junior Jenny Ponkowski also set a PR for the third-straight race and did so by 29 seconds in taking 43rd in 19:04. Last week at the home meet, she posted a time of 19:33.
Junior Taylor Smith was in the scoring five again running 20:00 flat for 71st.
After running as an individual in the first two races, sophomore Veronica Towianski made her Detroit Mercy debut and was the fifth Titan to cross the finish line placing 73rd in 20:08.
Sophomore Annmarie Taylor had a huge PR in the junior varsity race clocking 21:51 for 47th, which was 1:14 faster than her previous 5k race last week at the 30th Annual Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational.
Besides the team competing, Director of Track and Field & Cross Country Guy Murray '89 has been to 35 of the 37 National Catholic Championships, missing the event in 1989 and 1994. He was the Titans' top runner in 1988 with a 68th-place effort in 27:00.
