The Grand Valley State cross country team continues fall practice in preparation for their first event next Friday at the Spartan Invitational in East Lansing, Mich.
Both teams enter the 2016 season with high rankings in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCA) regional and national polls.
GVSU's women are ranked first in both the regional and national polls and return two top-ten finishers from the NCAA Championships in 2015 in senior Kendra Foley (2nd) and sophomore Gina Patterson (9th).
"Kendra and Gina will be big factors for us," said head coach Jerry Baltes. "We've got 14 or 15 ladies that we'll be looking at to step up and fill some roles."
The Laker men rank first in the regional poll and second in the national poll, trailing only Colorado Mines. GVSU returns four runners who competed at the NCAA Championships in 2015. Sophomore Zach Panning, Wuoi Mach, Chris May, and Bryce Bradley will all return for the Lakers this season.
"Our men are looking very strong," remarked Baltes. "We've got a lot of returning runners that put in a great summer. We've got some young guys that we feel can be factors for us down the road."
Both the men and women will compete at 12:00 pm at Forest Akers East Golf Course next Friday.
