NORTHVILLE, Mich. (9/10/2016) -- The individual crown is back in Titan Territory as junior Ben Kendell won the 30th Annual Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational, held at Cass Benton Park in Northville on Saturday.
Kendell becomes just the third Titan in school history to win the event following Martin Nelkie '14 in 2013 and Chris McPhee '01 in 1999 and 2001. He tied his career run with a time of 20:24 in winning his first collegiate race by eight seconds.
As a team, Detroit Mercy posted 97 points in the 4-mile race for fourth place behind Bucknell (25), Eastern Michigan (83) and the post-collegiate Red Cedar Running Club (95).
Freshman James McCann was the next Titan to cross the finish line in 21:38 for 21st, while freshman Santana Scott placed 25th in 21:49.
The longest running Titan tradition featured men's and women's open 5k races, which included over 40 high schools, a boy's and girl's 1.5-mile middle school race and the Tommy Titan Kid's race as children nine and under raced against the lovable Titan mascot for 200-meters.
Detroit Mercy will get right back on the course as it competes in another long cross country tradition in Notre Dame's National Catholic Championships, set for Friday, Sept. 15.
Here is how the action went down at the 30th Annual Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invite:
With rain throughout the night, the course was slick and muddy in certain spots.
The top five Titans included four true freshmen.
Kendell did not run in the season opener at Oakland and tied his career 4-mile mark of 20:24, which he posted at last year's home race, finishing fourth.
His time of 20:24 is still tied for the second fastest run by a Titan at Cass Benton behind only Chris McPhee's victorious time of 20:04 in 1999.
The last Titan to win the home event was Martin Nelkie with a 20:44 tally in 2013, while McPhee's time in 2001 was 20:28.
Freshman James McCann – who ran unattached last week at Oakland – made his official collegiate debut and was 21st in 21:38.
Freshman Santana Scott was the third Titan in taking 25th in 21:49, while last week's top Titan freshman Adam Fraeyman was fourth on the squad and 30th overall in 22:08.
Senior Austin Wigent and junior Charlie Felton made their season debuts.
The meet originated as a women's only race in 1987 with the men's race beginning in 1998. Titan alum Kevin Donner '84 – current head coach of Bucknell cross country and track and field – started the annual tradition as he was the head coach of the Titan women from 1984-92.
Titan alum Derek Gielarowski '16 – a member of two Horizon League Championship teams in 2013 and 2014 – ran as a member of the Red Cedar Running Club and took 28th in 22:03.
