Four Golden Grizzlies Qualify for NCAA Eeast Preliminary Round

INDIANAPOLIS – Bryce Stroede, Gino Vitella, Nicholas Girodat and Andrew Bowman qualified for the 2016 NCAA Division I East Outdoor Track & Field Championship Preliminary Round held Thursday, May 26 through Saturday, May 28 at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla. For the first time in program history, four student-athletes qualified during a single outdoor or indoor season.
Stroede is making his second consecutive NCAA appearance after qualifying in the 5000 meter with a school record time of 14:03.61 at the Raleigh Relays (Mar. 25) becoming the second Oakland student-athlete to quality for this event since Lia Jones in 2011. Last season, Stroede finished 43rd in the 10,000 meter.
Vitella is the first student-athlete in program history to make a second straight NCAA appearance in the shot put after tossing a season best throw of 56 feet, 10 inches at the Golden Grizzly Invite (Apr. 16). He also placed 43rd at last season’s NCAA East Preliminary.
Girodat is making his NCAA debut after qualifying in the 100 meter with a school record time of 10.41 at the Golden Grizzly Invite (Apr. 16) becoming the second student-athlete to qualify for this event since Jeff Decator in 2009.
Bowman is also making his NCAA debut after setting the 3000 meter steeplechase school record with a time of 8:58.83 at the Hillsdale Last Chance Classic (May 12). He is the second to qualify for this event since Mike Craze in 2008.
