Cornerstone U - Men's Track & Field continues strong spring season at GVSU

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Cornerstone Men's T&F team saw some great weather at the Grand Valley State Al Owens Classic on Saturday afternoon and got solid performances throughout the team. They look to continue the momentum into this weekend's Gina Relays at Hillsdale College.
CU senior, Jon Brinks (SR/Hudsonville, Mich.) took advantage of good weather and great competition to run season bests in the 100 and 200 meters at the Al Owens Classic hosted by Grand Valley State University.
After winning his 100 meter heat in the prelims in 10.99, Brinks raced to third in the final, clocking 10.97. He finished third in the final. He returned in the 200 meters for another season best, finishing eighth out of 66 competitors in 22.39.
In the distance events, sophomore Trevor Curtis (SO/Belding, Mich.) lowered his personal best to 15:28.12 to take seventh out of 66 in the 5,000 meters. Classmate, Kevin Vroegh (SO/Dyer, Ind.) turned in a collegiate best time of 1:54.71 in the 800 meters to finish fifth in his heat and tenth out of 92 entrants. Freshman, Eli Vandervelde ran 1:58.12 in his debut at that distance.
In field event action, Deon Fox (SR/Muskegon, Mich.) continued his excellent season in the pole vault, clearing the NAIA automatic national qualifying height for the third time. The senior from Muskegon tied for second at 16' 7 ¼". Sophomore Kyle Steigenga (SO/Holland, Mich.) placed ninth in the high jump, getting over 6' 3 ½".
Vandervelde, William Hempel (FR/Huntley, Ill.), Steigenga and Vroegh added one more season best in the 4x 400 meter relay. Their time of 3:25.04 placed second in their heat and tenth of nineteen teams.
