EMU - Women's Track and Field Completes Day One of Jesse Owens Classic

COLUMBUS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team got off to a solid start at the Jesse Owens Classic today, April 22. Day one of the meet, hosted in Columbus, Ohio by Ohio State University, saw the Eagles partake in three events, highlighted by a new program record in the discus.

The highlight of the day for EMU came in the 1500m run, where the Eagles had seven runners participate. Leading the charge was junior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia – Lyceum #83), who posted a second-place finish. Bogdanova crossed the finish line in 4:21.22, which was not only a personal-best, but also boosted her to fifth all-time in EMU laurels. Additionally, sophomore Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich. – Chippewa Valley) finished within the top-five as well, coming in fourth after running a career-best time of 4:23.24. Two other Eagles posted personal-bests as well, with sophomores Danielle Bentzley (Birmingham, Mich. – Seaholm) and Jenna Wyns (Londerzeel, Belgium – Sportschol KA2) posting times of 4:37.78 and 4:40.34, respectively.

The trend continued in the throws events on the day, as two of three posted career-best marks. In the discus, freshman Jada Taylor (Neptune, N.J. – Neptune) led the way, coming in fourth after notching a throw of 43.98 meters/ 144 feet 3.5-inches. Her throw was also the furthest in the EMU record books, edging out teammate Megan Pendleton (Lindsey, Ohio - Woodmoore) for the top spot. In the javelin, junior Kristina Coyne (Pittsburgh, Pa. – Chartiers Valley) finished sixth after posting a mark of 38.17 meters/ 125 feet 2.75-inches, which was also a career-best.

The Eagles continue with day two tomorrow, April 23. Action on day two begins with the men's pole vault at 10 a.m., and will conclude with the men's 4x400m relay at 4:25 p.m.
