EMU Women - Sweep in the 800m Leads the Eagles at the GVSU Tune-Up

ALLENDALE, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team closed the indoor regular season today, Feb. 19, with the GVSU Tune-Up. The day was highlighted by a sweep in the 800m, along with a one-two finish in the mile.

Beginning with the 60m dash, senior Aaliyah McKinney (South Bend, Ind. - John Adams) qualified to the finals with a time of 7.70. In the finals, the senior clocked in at 7.63 to take home the bronze. From there, the 800m group dominated the field, taking home the top-three places. Senior Rebecca Quaintance (White Lake, Mich. - Walled Lake Northern) paced the group, crossing the finish line in 2:14.54 to take home the gold. Her time was also a personal-best. Just behind her, freshman Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind. - Zionsville Community) nabbed the silver, finishing in a career-best 2:14.94. Finally, sophomore Claire Mesa (Rockford, Ill. - Rockford Lutheran) rounded out the trio in third with a time of 2:15.72.

The team also had a great day in the mile, where sophomore Danielle Bentzley (Birmingham, Mich. - Seaholm) took home first-place with a personal-best time of 4:58.56. Additionally, fellow sophomore Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich. - Chippewa Valley) nabbed the silver in 4:58.82. The Eagles had five competitors in the 60m hurdles with sophomore Tifani Byrd (Toms RIver, N.J. - Toms River North) leading the pack with a second-place prelims finish. Overall, the Green and White had three runners qualify to the finals. There, Byrd was the team's top finisher in fourth.

In the pole vault, senior Ellie Braidic (Pandora, Ohio - Pandora-Gilboa) managed to take fourth, finishing with a mark of 3.98 meters/ 13 feet 0.75-inches. Junior Janina Pollatz (Grandville, Mich. - Grand Rapids Christian) took home another bronze for the Eagles, notching a mark of 5.61 meters/ 18 feet 5-inches. Finally, junior Megan Pendleton (Lindsey, Ohio - Woodmoore) posted a personal-best in the weight throw with a toss of 14.58 meters/ 47 feet 10-inches.

The Green and White have now finished the regular season, and look towards the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships. The event will be held by Akron next weekend, Feb. 26-27.
