Calvin Women's Track and Field Team Has Big Weekend of Performances at Friday Invites

The Calvin women's track and field team put together several sterling performances at Friday invitationals. A group of Calvin distance athletes competed at the GVSU Big Meet while the bulk of Calvin's team competed at the Aquinas College Little Meet Friday evening.
At the GVSU Big Meet, senior McKenzie Diemer (Caledonia/South Christian HS) clocked in with a season-best time of 5:02.73 in the mile run that places her 29th on the NCAA III indoor performance list.
Junior Lauren Strohbehn (Stillwater, MN/St. Croix Preparatory HS) had a season-best time of 17:55.45 in the 5,000 meters as did freshman Katie Diekema (Kenmore, Wash./Ingelmoor HS) with a time of 18:04.71. Sophomore Kate McLain (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) also came in with a solid time of 18:49.27 in the 5K.
At the Aquinas College Little Meet, sophomore Bethany Love (Kentwood/East Kentwood HS) had a breakthrough performance, winning the shot put with a career-best heave of 41-10 which places her 24th on the NCAA III indoor performance list. Love also won the weight throw with a career-best throw of 50-0. Senior Stacie Mead (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern HS) had stellar efforts in both events, placing second in the shot put (37-11 1/2) and third in the weight throw (41-0 1/4).
In the 800 meters, sophomore Caroline Boss (Charlevoix/Charlevoix) took first place in a time of 2:21.24. Junior Carissa Weis (Mount Prospect, IL/Mount Prospect HS) won the triple jump with a leap of 34-7.
In the 60 meter hurdles, senior Maria Steblay (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie HS) took third with a season-best time of 9.75. Sophomore Maggie LaLonde (Grand Haven/Grand Haven HS) took fourth in a time of 1:05.27. Freshman Erin Van Lenten (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) took second in the high jump (4-11 3/4). Freshman Annalane Miller (Dexter/Dexter HS) was fourth in the pole vault (9-5 1/4). Senior Ayooluwa Ayoola (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was seventh in the long jump (16-1 1/2).
"Our throwers had a great weekend with several season and personal bests," said Calvin head track and field coach Bret Otte. "Our distance runners had a great weekend at Grand Valley State and are poised for some great racing in the coming weeks. Our middle-distance runners also had a great weekend highlighted by the races of Caroline Boss and Jeff Meitler in the 800 meters."
As a team, Calvin took third in the final standings of the Aquinas College Little Meet with 107.5 points.
