Calvin Male Track and Field Athletes Come Up Big at Weekend Invitationals

Calvin put together a standout day of performances at a pair of weekend invitationals on Friday. A group of Calvin distance runners competed at the Grand Valley State Big Meet while the bulk of Calvin's team competed at the Aquinas College Little Meet.
At the GVSU Big Meet, senior Ethan Anderson (Stillwater, MN/Stillwater Area HS) came up with a season-best performance in the 5,000 meters, clocking in with a time of 14:44.22 that places him 12th on the NCAA III indoor performance list.
Freshman Jamison Koeman (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) also had a season-best time of 14:57.96 in the event.
At the Aquinas College Little Meet, junior Jonathan Schaap (Mahomet, IL/Mahomet-Seymour HS) took first in the mile run with a time of 4:28.02.
Sophomore Ethan Valentine (Mason, Oh./William Mason HS) had a monster evening, wining the 400 meters in a season-best time of 50.22 and the 200 meters in a time of 23.26. His 400 meter time places him 38th on the NCAA III indoor performance list.
Freshman Lee Barents (Redlands, Ca./Arrowhead Christian Academy) continued to impress, taking second in the long jump (20-10) and fourth in the 60 meter dash (7.45) while senior Cole Evans (Chicago, IL/Walther Lutheran HS) was fifth in the 60 meters (7.48).
In the 800 meters, senior Jeff Meitler (Berlin, Wisc./Milwaukee Lutheran HS) took first place with a time of 1:59.29 while senior Matt Oram (Toledo, Oh./Toledo Christian HS) was third (2:01.62).
Perhaps the highlight of the night for the Calvin men however came from senior Lucas Wolters (Vincennes, Ind./South Knox HS) who took first place in the pole vault with a career-best vault of 15-9 1/4 that places him ninth on the current NCAA III indoor performance list. Junior Nathan Marcus (Holland/Holland Christian HS) also had a career-best vaul of 14-9 1/2 that placed him in third place.
In the shot put, junior Eric Jipping (Canton/Plymouth Christian HS) took second with a season-best throw of 47-3 1/4 while freshman Brendan VanHouten (Comstock Park/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was second in the weight throw with a season best mark of 47-5.
"Our throwers had a great weekend with several season and personal bests," said Calvin head track and field coach Bret Otte. "Our distance runners had a great weekend at Grand Valley State and are poised for some great racing in the coming weeks. Our middle-distance runners also had a great weekend highlighted by the races of Caroline Boss and Jeff Meitler in the 800 meters."
As a team, Calvin finished fourth in the final standings at the Aquinas College Little Meet with 108 points.
