EMU Men - Eagles Close Book on First Day of Big Weekend

ALLENDALE, Mich. & FINDLAY, Ohio & AMES, Iowa (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team closed out the first day of their big weekend today, Feb. 12. The team, which is spread out amongst four different meets, had a solid showing in each different location.

Beginning in Allendale, Mich. with the GVSU Big Meet, senior Wayne Blanchard (Toledo, Ohio – St. Francis De Sales) paced the team in the 60m dash, clocking in at 6.97 to place 12th. Moving to the 200m dash, sophomore Brandon Bolden (Solon, Ohio – Solon) crossed the finish line in 22.32, finishing 19th and tying Blanchard in the event. The 400m dash saw the Eagles place their first competitor on the podium, as senior Jeff Elam (Latrobe, Pa. – Greater Latrobe Senior) nabbed third, finishing with a time of 47.88. Fellow senior Mason Waynes (Kenosha, Wis. – Bradford) also finished within the top-10, taking eighth with a time of 48.72.

Only senior Scott Bradley (Battle Creek, Mich. – Lakeview) ran in the 800m, finishing in 1:53.52, which was just off his personal-best. The duo of redshirt sophomores Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich. – Mason) and Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland – Mountain Ridge) provided a solid one-two punch in the mile, nabbing third and fourth with personal best times of 4:06.43 and 4:06.46, respectively. From there, redshirt sophomore Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium - Stedelijk Lyceum Paardenmarkt Luchthaven) nabbed another medal for the Green and White, placing second in the 3000m with a time of 8:20.95, another career-best.

Another redshirt sophomore, Abel Flores (Defiance, Ohio – Defiance), was the lone EMU runner in the 5000m, where he crossed the finish line in 14:41.97 to set a career-best. Moving to the 60m hurdles, senior Bryce Lindsey (New Middletown, Ohio – Fairfield Senior) qualified to the finals, ultimately finishing fourth with a time of 8.13. Finally, freshman Cameron Hart (Columbus, Ohio – Bishop Hartley) competed in both the high jump and the long jump, while fellow freshman Micah Peters (York, Ontatio – Vaughn Road Academy) took home gold in the triple jump with a persona-best mark of 14.22 meters/ 46 feet 8-inches.

Two Eagle runners took part in the Iowa State Classic, with sophomore Csaba Matko (Racalmas, Hungary - Szechenyi Istvan Gimnazium) running in the 3000m. Matko turned in a 22nd-place performance, clocking in at 8:08.59 to set a new personal-best. Redshirt junior Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio - Maumee) took part in the 5000m run, where he finished 24th with a time of 14:06.49.

Moving to Findlay, Ohio, another group of Eagles had a great day as well. In the 3000m, freshman Morgan O'Flahrity (Madison, Wis. – Edgewood) placed second with a personal-best time of 8:54.31. A number of additional freshmen ran in the event, with three other EMU runners also nabbing career-bests. Redshirt senior Solomon Simmons (Murrieta, Calif. – Murrieta Valley) qualified to the 60m hurdles finals, where he finished first with a time of 8.13, handily quicker than the second-place finisher.

In the high jump, junior Zach Waldron (Grand Rapids, Mich. – Northview) took second with a mark of 2.01 meters/ 6 feet 7-inches. Waldron also competed in the pole vault, where he finished with a personal-best vault of 4.48 meters/ 14 feet 8.25-inches to finish third. The lone Eagle in the long jump was freshman Alex Jacobs (Dublin, Ohio – Dublin Jerome), who took fifth with a jump of 6.19 meters/ 20 feet 3.75-inches.

In the shot put, sophomore Mike Hierholzer (Medina, Ohio – Medina) took home second-place honors, finishing with a mark of 15.97 meters/ 52 feet 4.75-inches. Also finishing in the top-10 was redshirt freshman Zach Purcilly (Troy, Mich. – Avondale), who secured a mark of 14.66 meters/ 48 feet 1.25-inches. In the elite shot put competition, redshirt senior Keith Williams (Sherman, Ill. – Williamsville) finished fifth with a toss of 16.94 meters/ 55 feet 7-inches.

Finishing up with the weight throw, two EMU competitors finished in the top-five, with sophomore Elijah Albert-Grayer (Canton, Mich. – Canton) taking home the bronze with a throw of 17.49 meters/ 57 feet 4.75-inches. Additionally, redshirt senior Andrew Wentz (Napoleon, Ohio – Napoleon) finished fifth and nabbing a mark of 17.14 meters/ 56 feet 3-inches. In the elite weight throw, redshirt junior Anthony Jones (Sandusky, Ohio – Sandusky) had a repeat performance of last year, smashing his own EMU personal-record mark with a new school-record throw of 21.84 meters/ 71 feet 8-inches.

The Green and White continue with day two at the Iowa State Classic, as well as the Spire Invitational, tomorrow, Feb. 13.
