DEXTER, Mich. -- The fifth-ranked University of Michigan men's cross country team ended its 2015 regular season on Friday (Oct. 23) with the 5,000-meter EMU Classic. Just the second 5K of the year, the meet was run at the familiar Hudson Mills Metropark, the former site of the Michigan Open.

Head coach Kevin Sullivan was pleased overall and pointed to the efforts of unattached competitor Johnny Phillips, sophomore/freshman Kyle Kroon and others from the middle-distance group as having a solid race. Though the team's top nine is set, Sullivan made it a point of emphasis to ensure the group that ran today is ready to step in if needed.

"We had a few guys that we needed a little bit more from today," he said, "and we'll work on that. We are relying on this group to step in if someone in our top nine gets banged up and we have a little bit of work to do there."

Kroon was the top-finishing Wolverine in uniform, shaving close to 10 seconds off his time from the EMU Celebration at the beginning of the season. The Toms River, New Jersey, native clocked 15:10.1 to place third, just behind unattached competitor Johnny Phillips (15:03.1), who will compete on the track for U-M in a few months. Unattached competitor Justine Kiprotich took the win in 14:58.7.

Kroon saw a few hard months' worth of training pay off with a top-three finish. Without the Big Ten competitors on the line, he stepped up to lead the squad this afternoon.

"The last couple of months of training have been pretty solid for me," Kroon said afterwards.

"It was a different mental game today without our Big Ten guys in the lineup," he added, "so this was my first time really being one of the leaders for Michigan. There is a little bit of pressure there, but it gets you going and it gets the adrenaline pumping."

Next across the line for Michigan were sophomore/freshman Colin Martin (15:22.4) in ninth and his classmate Chase Barnett (15:23.7) in 10th. Martin took more than 25 seconds off his season-opening 5K time, while Barnett shaved more than 10 seconds off of his.

Outside of the top 10, junior/sophomore Cody Snavely finished 13th, while junior/sophomore Will Burke (14th) and senior Alex Moran (15th) also earned top-20 finishes.

Sullivan observed plenty of positives during the 5K event but always sees the room for improvement in his squad. He knows it will take their very best to secure a Big Ten Championships next Sunday (Nov. 1).

"We have been running well, but I don't feel that we've put our best race together yet, so that is exciting for us in the sense that I think there is more there," said Sullivan.

"It's just a matter of our guys putting it all together on the same day; that's what it's going to take to win a Big Ten championship," he added, "We have to have all nine guys coming ready to race next Sunday."

U-M begins its postseason run next weekend with the Big Ten Championships on Sunday (Nov. 1) at 10:45 a.m. CST in Evanston, Illinois.
