HILLSDALE, Mich. - The No. 13-ranked Michigan State women’s cross country team took third with a combined effort of 70 points at the Michigan Intercollegiate Championships on Friday, Oct. 9, at Hayden Park in Hillsdale, Michigan. Freshmen Morgan Fleischmann and Sarah Rustmann earned All-Michigan honors with top-10 finishes.
“We are very proud of the way we competed today,” said Associate Head Cross Country Coach Lisa Senakiewich. “The girls went out and stayed to the game plan. We had some girls find each other late and several people ran personal records. Today was good for this young group. We always look forward to competing, and we tell them that if they gave their best effort, helped a teammate out and ran to the plan then it was a good day.”
Fleischmann took eighth with an 18:45.8 over the 5,000-meter course. Rustmann rounded out the top 10, crossing the line in 18:49.3. In close pursuit of MSU’s All-Michigan performers was junior Erin Billette in 11th place with a time of 18:53.5.
A trio of Spartan freshmen finished consecutively in 21st, 22nd and 23rd to anchor MSU’s small group of runners that made the trip to Hillsdale. Megan Schwartz raced her way to a 19:33.6, as teammate Lauren Jenkins finished in 19:35.0. Running in her third meet of the year, Taylor Norris turned in a season-best effort of 20:07.1.
Western Michigan claimed the team title in the women’s race, placing five harriers in the top 10. Hillsdale took second with a score of 36.
Michigan State will send both the men and women’s programs to the Wisconsin Adidas Invite next week on Oct. 16 in Madison.
