LSSU - Birkeland finishes third, Heimonen fifth in Yanni Invitational

KINCHELOE, Mich. - Lake Superior State men's and women's cross country teams hosted the second annual Chris Yanni Memorial Invitational 8k and 5k races Saturday. The race, in honor of former LSSU all-region runner Chris Yanni '91 who was killed in a cycling accident in 1992, was held at The Oaks golf course and featured six teams in the men's competition and four teams in the women's race.
The women kicked off the day's activities with a 10 a.m. start. Northern Michigan runner Sarah Goble finished with a time of 19 minutes to claim the top spot in the women's race. NMU captured the top three individual finishes and two more in the top 10 to finish with the best team score. LSSU freshman Lydia Heimonen captured the fifth spot with a 19:21 time and helped propel the Lakers into the second overall team.
The men's race was won by unattached runner Thomas VanSlembrouck with a time of 26:21. Senior Adam Birkeland finished third in the men's portion with a time of 26:31. The Lakers finished second behind a Northwood squad paced by Sammy Tanui finishing with a 26:23 time and a second overall finish.
