KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Following their opening weekend in Ypsilanti, the Eastern Michigan University women's cross country team traveled to Kalamazoo, Mich. for the George Dales Invitational, Sept. 11. The team continued their trend of success at this race, winning with a total of 21 points against Mid-American Conference opponent Western Michigan University's 36 points. Eastern has won or tied for first at this race dating back to 2010.
The Eagles were led once again by Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich. - Davison) and Sofie Gallein (Gits, Belgium - Univ. of Leuven), who finished second and third with times of 20:54.24 and 21:29.81, respectively. Both harriers improved their times at this race by nearly 30 seconds in comparison to last year. Rounding out the top five finishers were newcomer Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia) and sophomore Danielle Bentzley (Birmingham, Mich. - Seaholm), who crossed the finish line in 21:45.56 and 21:51.23. Additionally, freshman Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind. - Zionsville Community) placed in the top 10, finishing the race in 22:11.75 and taking seventh place. Finally, senior Amy Frauhammer (Saline, Mich. - Saline) rounded out the top 10 with a time of 22:21.23.
Head coach Sue Parks likes what she sees from her team this early in the season. Although they have only been together a short time, she already sees plenty of impovement from last week. Following the race, she explained "I was pleased with how we ran. I told the team to take advantage of the cool weather and run aggressively. We've run this same course nearly every year and this is the fastest we've ever run as a team. We competed well and showed improvement over last week and that's what counts right now. The team has only been together for 12 days so I'm looking forward to a solid block of training together before our next meet in two weeks."
The Green and White have the following weekend free of races, allowing for an early season break from competition. The team will continue their season at the Virginia invitational, Sept. 26, in Earlysville, Va.
